These last four months involved an incredible journey of learning about career and life

callings throughout this leadership class. Between The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness by

Timothy Keller, The Liturgy of the Ordinary by T.H. Warren, and Designing Your Life b y

Burnette and Evans, all of these books contributed differently to my learning throughout this

course. In addition to these texts, our guest speakers were incredible.

Starting with the Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness by Timothy Keller, I learned a lot about

the self-esteem issue, which is more properly addressed as an ego issue in the book. It’s a major

red flag in everyday life. I really enjoyed the metaphor of our ego being like a bellows, where it’s

full of air, inflated, and painful (Keller, 2012). I learned that we are too focused on ourselves, we

compare ourselves too often, and we are constantly trying to be the “best” to only receive

temporary satisfaction.

In The Liturgy of the Ordinary, Warren took into account throughout her book that Jesus

had the ordinary days as well. “The one who is worthy of worship, glory, and fanfare spent

decades in obscurity and ordinariness. As if the incarnation itself is not mind-bending enough,

the incarnate God spent his days quietly, a man who went to work, got sleepy, and lived a

pedestrian life among average people” (Warren, 2016, p.16). It’s literally the simple tasks that

are often forgotten that Jesus participated in too.

Last but not least, in Designing Your Life, it was an impeccable journey of self-discovery

through the different exercises in the text. From the beginning of designing your dashboard and

gages of how you’re doing in the different areas of your life, it really put into perspective the

questions I was always asking my friends in intentional conversations: how are you doing

spiritually, academically, physically, and mentally? The daily logs helped me learn that my

environment is the number one factor to my engagement and energy, especially when it comes to

academics in the classroom and at my apartment. The prototyping and all the following sections

were equally as useful in learning more about planning my life.

The guest speakers that came into class were absolutely incredible. Having been one of

Judson’s residents my sophomore year in Bowles and getting to know him on a personal level, it

was amazing to hear him speak about business and purpose in the context of life. He also

previously introduced me to these ideas as his resident by always asking “what’s your why?” and

asking about our purpose. Our guest speaker on goal setting helped open my eyes to categorizing

specific goals, specifically prioritizing and creating these goals. Mr. Trentham was also able to

answer my random business questions for starting up and building off of a pre-existing

establishment, and gave me more hope for the future, especially in the department of buying a

house.

My next steps after acquiring this knowledge is to implement it into my everyday life. It

seems as though this entire class was an introduction to life coaching and figuring out your

purpose, and I’ve loved every second of it. The books have presented all the ideas mentioned

above, and it gives me more of a hope for the future. The possibilities are endless, just because

you’re in a specific major doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what you’re going to do for the rest of

your life. For myself, I am a nursing major. I will be a nurse in the hospitals for a few years, but

I’m also studying leadership. My passion is in leading others and making tough decisions that

other colleagues aren’t able to. I like running different things, whether it is a group project or

starting up a new organization, and find my strengths in that. My next steps will be graduation,

getting my RN license, moving to a northern state (Montana or Minnesota), and starting my

career in a fast paced, high stress environment such as the intensive care unit or the emergency

department in whatever hospital is willing to hire me.

Our very first assignment was a class introduction with our brand bios. Mine stated “My

proactive problem solving skills with advanced medical training for NASA keeps the United

States Space Force operating with medical professionals focused on discovering 'out of this

world' cures to diseases to make the world and the universe a healthier, happier place.” Looking

back now, my personal, vocational identity statement can be incorporated into a new brand

bio/personal and vocational identity statement: My proactive learning achievements throughout

an undergraduate college degree showcase the motivated drive all organizations seek from their

employees. I am an accomplished nursing student that has a handle on the bellows of her ego to

buckle down and get the necessary jobs completed in a timely manner. I am a leader who will

accomplish more than anyone can believe, and my burning flame for education/learning will

burn until my very last breath. I will be a nurse educator and leader of others, and strongly feel

that this is my calling and career trajectory.
