WASHING & VARNISHING OF MOTOR WINDING

1 PURPOSE:
 To varnish / wash motor winding for strengthener of its insulation
2 SCOPE:
 Electrical & Instrument Department (YES)
 Process / Moulding / Power House / Utility (YES)
 Mechanical (YES)
 Safety ( NO)
3 PRE-REQUISITE
 Approved cold work permit
 WD-40 & Cotton Rags
 Varnish
 Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC)
 Proper Tools
 Insulation Test Meter
 Complete isolation before starting the job
4 PROCEDURE:
 Generate a cold work permit according to job on that motor
 Arrange proper tools for motor dismantling from it's foundation with the co-ordination of
mechanical department , also arrange waste collecting tray, WD-40, cotton rags, varnish spray, CTC
& insulation measuring meter etc
 Before starting the job system must be isolated by process & electrical (from field & MCC both)
 After isolation a tag “ISOLATED FOR MAINTENANCE WORK” will be hanged at motor starter
during the job & user department authorized personnel will verify isolation by trying to switch
“ON” the equipment. He will also verify that isolation tag is hanged on the equipment before
signing go-ahead on work permit
 Mechanical department will de-couple the motor
 Open the terminal box and note down the connection type (Star/Delta) and also draw the connection
diagram and mark the cables before disconnection the power cable
 Disconnect the power cable and wrapped down properly these ends with the help of PVC insulation
tape
 Disconnect the earth and control cables then wrapped and mark it
 Remove the motor from it's foundation with the co-ordination of mechanical department
 Arrange a tray for collecting waste CTC during washing the winding
 Clean motor windings gently with CTC & then wait some time or clean the windings with pressure
air

 Apply spray varnish on windings in appropriate quantity (if varnishing is needed)

 Wait for some time in order to dry the windings after varnishing
 For heavy motors, dry the windings by 500 Watts bulbs with temperature monitoring of windings
(heating for a long period may damage the windings)
 After dry the windings, perform winding insulation test, if result is not good then re-varnish
 Also gently clean the motor rotor, ends cover, fan cover & fan with WD-40 & cotton rags
 If insulation result is satisfactory then assemble the motor, re-installed it with co-ordination of
mechanical department & connect all cables as noted
 Energize the motor from MCC & field then perform a test run and take current on each phase
 If result is found ok then hand over the motor to mechanical department for re-coupling
 After completing the said job, user department authorized personnel will verify the motor direction
& on load condition
 The user department authorized personnel shall test the said motor after removal of electrical &
other isolations for at-least 15-30 minutes for observation of any abnormality & assurance for good
stand-by

 Close your work permit from concerned authorized personnel

 Clean the area & remove all the tools

 Make an entry of the said job in the technician log book
