Hello Students !
I hope you all enjoyed the story, “Building a Shelter". Here is a summary of the story to
help you during your revision of the chapter . Copy it down in your notebook.

SUMMARY

The day when the Robinson family landed on the island they realised that they had to
build a shelter for themselves. They planned to build a home on top of a giant tree. The
first thing they needed was a ladder to climb on the tree. For making the ladder they
already had plenty of ropes. They needed some pieces of bamboo to make the steps of
the ladder and to make some bows and arrows. So , they headed towards a nearby river
where they found some bamboo trees. They cut the bamboos into pieces and carried
the bundle to the forest. On their way, a child named Ernest carried the bundle and
another child named Fritz and their father were ready with their guns because they
were not sure what kind of wild animals they may face in the forest. Their dog ,named
Flora, suddenly jumped into some bushes and immediately a flock of flamingos flew out
of the bushes.

When they returned back to the forest, the family got back to their work and finished
making the ladder before nightfall. To fix the ladder into the tree, they attached the
rope into an arrow and shooted it over the branch . The ladder was then pulled up and
fixed. After making the ladder, their next task was to build a home on the tree. The
younger boys helped in building the house by searching for planks on the seashore.
With the planks , they made a wooden floor with a fence around it. They hung six
hammocks on the branches of the tree and to make the roof, they covered the branches
above them with a sailcloth. By Sunday , the Robinson family finished building their
home. They kept the day for prayers, rest and pleasant talk.

While they were having conversation , the father suggested that they should give a
name to their new home and to the other parts of the island . He said that they should
give such names that would remind them of their adventure. All of them starting
thinking of some names. The mother gave the name, ‘Safety Bay' to the bay where they
landed together because she believed that God brought them to the shore safely there .
All agreed to this name. The place where they found the flamingos was named as ‘
Flamingo Marsh' and the bridge they built together was named as , ’Family Bridge'. The
place where they looked for the sailors to rescue them was given the name, ‘Cape
Disappointment' and they called the river as ‘Jackal River'. However, they couldn't all
agree on a name for their new home.

The boys suggested to name their homes as ‘Tree Castle' or ‘Fig town' but the father
didn't like either name. Then Fritz suggested the name, ‘Eagles’ Nest' because their
shelter was built on a tree and looked more like a nest than a Castle or Town .As the
Eagle is the king of all birds, Fritz said that they were no less than kings. To this , the
father replied that they are not kings and therefore they should name the home as
'Falcons' Nest’ because they are all brave like the falcons. They all agreed to this name
and named their home as ‘Falcons’ Nest'.

FUN FACT: The story is an extract from the novel , The Swiss Family Robinson. In the
novel, the family stayed on the Island for over a span of 10 long years. Later on , they
found a British ship and got rescued. Several members of the family chose to live
tranquilly on their island while several of them returned to Europe with the British.
