Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.

UNIT-I
1. a) What effect does a decrease in mass have on the frequency
of a system? 6
b) A cylinder of mass M radius r rolls without slipping on a
cylindrical surface of radius R. Find the natural frequency for
small oscillation about the lowest point 6
OR
2. a) What assumes are made in finding the natural frequency of a
single degree of freedom system using the energy method 6
b) A heavy machine weighing 9.81 kN is being lowered vertically
down by a winch at a uniform velocity of 2 m/s, the steel cable
supporting the machine has diameter of 0.01 m. The Winch is
suddenly supported when the steel cable’s length is 20 m. Find
the period and amplitude of the ensuing vibration of the machine 6
UNIT-II
3. a) What happens to the response of an undamped system at
resonance 6
b) A weight of 60 N is suspended from a spring of stiffness
4500 N/m. and is subjected to a harmonic force of amplitude
65 N and frequency 8 Hz. Find
i) The extension of the spring due to the suspended weight
ii) The static displacement of the spring sue to the maximum
applied force
iii) The amplitude of forced motion of the weight 6
OR
4. a) What assumptions or made about the motion a forced vibration
with non-viscous damping in finding the amplitude 6
b) For a vibrating system m = 15kg, k = 3000 N/m and
c = 50 N-s/m. A harmonic force of amplitude 200 N and
frequency 4 Hz axe on the mass. If the initial displacement
and velocity of the mass or 20 mm and 7 m/s, find the
complete solution representing the motion of the mass 6
UNIT-III
5. a) Derive the equation of motion of a system subjected to base
excitation 6
b) Find the response of a single degree of freedom system under
an Impulse F for the following data m = 2 kg c = 6 N-s/m
k = 40 N/m F = 4δ(t), x 0 = 0.02 m. Initial velocity is 2 m/s 6
OR
6. a) What are the advantages of the Laplace transform method? 6
b) In a two mass torsional system two wheels are mounted 0.18 m
apart on a shaft 60 mm diameter. If the moments of inertia of
the two wheels are J 1 = 1.5 kg-m2 and J 2 = 3.0 kg-m2, find the
position of the node and the frequency of the free torsional
oscillations. If both the rotors are coupled to the shaft through
similar torsional springs couplings, find the torsional stiffness
of these couplings so as to reduce to half the natural frequency
of the complete system in torsional 6
UNIT-IV
7. a) How is the frequency equation derived for a multi-degree of
freedom system? 6
b) For a taut string having tension T and three concentrated
masses as shown below, use the method of influence numbers to
find the three natural frequencies. Find also the mode shapes.
Check on the orthogonal properties of the normal modes 6
OR
8. a) What is the basic principle used in Dunkerley’s method? 6
b) Using Rayleigh-Ritz method. Estimate the fundamental
frequency of the system shown in Fig. The shaft mass is 20 kg. 6
UNIT-V
9. A uniform taut string of length 2 m fixed at both ends has a large
initial tension. It is struck in such a manner as to give an initial
velocity to the string which varies linearly from zero at the ends to
20 m/s at the centre. Determine the subsequent motion 12
OR
10. a) What causes instability in a rotor system? 6
b) A variable speed machine has a diametral clearance of 3 mm
between the stator and the rotor. The rotor has a mass of 60 kg
and has an unbalance of 0.5 kg-cm. The rotor is mounted on a
steel shaft midway between the two bearings. The operating
speed of the machine varies from 500 to 5800 rpm. Specify the
stiffness of the shaft so that the rotor is always clear of the stator
at any operating speed within the range 6
