1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose (Modify)
The purpose of this engineering specification is to provide designers and vendors
with the requirements for the selection of instrumentation junction boxes.
All guidelines of PDVSA K–300, PDVSA Instrumentation Introduction, shall also
be explicitly followed.
Since PDVSA has decided to adopt the PIP (Process Industry Practices)
document PIP PCSEL001, Instrument Junction Boxes Specification, as an
integral part of the Engineering Design Manual (MID), the requirements in this
document are additions or modifications to PIP PCSEL001, and the
section/paragraph numbers and associated headings used in this document
correspond to the ones used in PIP PCSEL001.

3 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 (Modify) NEMA Type 12 and 12K, dust and drip tight design boxes shall be used
only in dry, indoor locations.
3.2 (Add) Specific corrosive agents shall be indicated in Junction Box Data sheet.
Comment: (Modify) See NEMA 250 and NEMA ICS6 for Type 4/4X, Type 7
and Type 12/12K requirements.
3.4 (Modify) Knock–outs shall not be provided in the boxes unless otherwise
specified.

3.6 (Modify) Terminal strips (type as specified by the user) shall be DIN rail mounted
type terminals that utilize a screw clamp connection for terminating wiring.
Pressure type wiring connectors are also permitted. DIN rails shall be affixed in
enclosure using “terminal strap mounting kits” with stainless steel mounting bolts.
Terminal strips for thermocouple wires shall be matched with thermocouple wire
type. Terminal strips for Intrinsic Safety shall be of light blue color.
Comment: (Modify) Back panels shall be used to mount terminals. These
panels shall be 12–gauge steel with a white enamel finish over
a phosphatized surface. Back panel shall be firmly bonded to
external ground lug. Either through the affixing bolts in the case
of metallic boxes or by means of a grounding strap connected to
appropriate grounding lugs in the case of nonmetallic boxes.
3.8 (Modify) Junction box number shall be installed on the front of the box using a 2”
x 4” nameplate attached with stainless steel screws or bonded with epoxy glue.
The Tag ID shall be as specified in the Data Sheet. For general purpose and
explosion proof junction boxes, black letters on a white background shall be used.
For dedicated Safety Instrumented Systems junction boxes, white letters on a red
background may be used. For Intrinsic Safety boxes black letters on Light Blue
background shall be used. Additional legends shall identify the service (SAFETY
INSTRUMENTED SYSTEM, INTRINSIC SAFETY CIRCUITS, etc).
3.10 (Modify) Number of terminals and box size will be as specified in the Data Sheet.
Junction boxes shall be of Manufacturer’s standard sizes. Specific project
requirements shall establish JB sizes and number of terminals.
3.11 (Modify) Junction boxes shall be provided with an external grounding lug. For
nonmetallic junction boxes, grounding lug shall be two–sided pass through. See
par. 3.6 additional comment.
3.15 (Add). Installation of junction boxes inside Division I areas shall be avoided.
Otherwise, NEMA Type 7/4X for Explosion proof design and NEMA Type 4X for
Intrinsic Safety design shall be used after PDVSA approval.

7.2.6 (Add) A rolled lip shall be provided around all sides of the box opening and three
sides of the door opening.
8.2.3 Carbon steel junction boxes shall meet the requirements of Section 4
8.2.4 Stainless steel junction boxes shall meet the requirements of section 5.
8.2.6 For outdoor use, NEMA 7 junction boxes shall also be specified as NEMA 4X
(combination–type enclosure).
