GMO

(1) What is GMO?

Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms such as plants, animals or

microorganisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does
not occur naturally by mating and natural recombination.

(2) Are GMOs good or bad?

GMOs, just like any modification, have advantages and disadvantages. The
goodness and badness of the effect of GMO depends on its usage. One of the good
effects of a genetically modified crops is the increase of its resistance to pests,
diseases, or environmental conditions or even resistance to chemical treatments.
These changes makes a certain crop have a longer life. However, it can eventually
process the gene flow.

(3) What are the pros and cons of GMOs?

According to experts, the possible benefits of genetic engineering includes

increase resistance to disease and drought, reduced cost for supply of food and
longer life. GMOs also makes plants and animals grow faster. Also, the food with
more desirable traits such as potatoes that produce less of a cancer-causing
substance and modified medicinal foods could be used as vaccines or other
medicines. However, despite of many benefits that modified plant and animal can
give, scientists were debating the drawbacks of this modification such as allergic
reactions, triggered cancer, increase antibacterial resistance and out-crossing for
plants.

(4) What are the health effects and environmental effects of GMO?

The biggest threat caused by GMO especially in food can have a harmful effects
on the human body. It was believed that consumption of these genetically
engineered foods can cause the development of diseases which are immune to
antibiotics. Effects of GMO in environment includes contamination from modified
organisms wherein a gene flow from GM plants.
