DeVotchKa

[Music- The Alley]

WONG 1
DeVotchKa is the Russian word for Girl. Their music delightfully summons up feelings of sunshine
and fields of flower with the use of gradual layers of texture change mixed with a dose of unique
harmonies. The band's new album 100 lovers open with the song The Alley, which blooms like a
flower into spacey vocals. In Interlude I, obvious uses of folk, electronic, and classical elements are
carefully blended to introduce the most mainstream song on their album, The Man From San
Sebastian.

Strings and piano play an important part of their music, as do the accordian and various soft
percussive instruments. Two interludes separate the songs logically based on the style. The album
opens with four songs carrying largely classical influence. Sandwiched between Interlude I and
Interlude II are two songs better identified with the genre of indie rock. Following Interlude 2 are
three Mariachi inspired songs, Bad Luck Heels, Ruthless, and Contrabanda. The last song pulls the
album order into a circle with it's violin produced chords and gypsy-like drumming patterns.

WONG 3
The four man band, classified as indie rock or gypsy punk, started playing burlesque shows in their
early days. After self releasing records, the band gained a large underground fan-base. All four of
the members are multi-talented; Nick Urata sings, plays guitar, theremin, piano, and the trumpet.
Tom Hagerman plays the violin, accordian, piano. Jeanie Shroder with vocals, sousaphone, and
double bass. Shawn King with percussion and trumpet.

One of DeVotchKa's accolades is for their scoring of the film Little Miss Sunshine, which was
nominated for a 2006 grammy award for Best Compilation Soundtrack. Since their last album "A
Mad & Faithful Telling" from 2008, the band added a new appeal to the general audience with the
songs Exhaustible and The Man from San Sebastian, but yet etaining a loyal use of ethnomusic
elements.
