 Key Terms:
C. Lesson
Proper
 Adjectives- are words that describe or clarify a noun. Adjectives
describe nouns by giving some information about an object’s size,
shape, age, color, origin or material.

Examples:

It’s a big table. (size)

It’s a round table. (shape)
It’s an old table. (age)
It’s a brown table. (color)
It’s an English table. (origin)
It’s a wooden table. (material)
It’s a lovely table. (opinion)
It’s a broken table. (observation)
It’s a coffee table. (purpose)

*When an item is defined by its purpose, that word is usually not an

adjective, but it acts as one in that situation.
coffee table
pool hall
hunting cabin
baseball player

 The teacher will post a copy of a paragraph on the board.

 Student will read and analyze the paragraph.

Scary monsters are found everywhere. Some are frightening and

some are strange. There are enormous, hairy monsters, and small,
fuzzy monsters. Some are imaginary, like angry trolls that live in dark,
damp caves or under old, wooden bridges. Others live in dense,
overgrown forests and eat slimy, disgusting food.  Monsters can be
green, red, or black.

 Underline all the adjectives in this paragraph. HINT: There are 20.

A. Activity Game
I Spy

Students are sure to have had experience playing "I Spy." Turning the challenge into adjective
games puts a new twist on an old classic!
Have a student come up to the front of the class and say, “I spy with my little eye something
that is…" and adjectives related to that object. Then have the students in one row take turns
guessing the object being described. After everyone in the row has a chance to guess, have
students write down the object that they think is being referred to. Then have the student in
the front of the room reveal the object. Any student who guessed correctly scores one point.
D. Activity and Repeat these adjective activities with another student and the second row in the classroom.
