ABDOMINOPELVIC
QUADRANTS
The abdomen was
divided into 4 quadrants
by anatomists and
physicians for study,  Liver  Stomach
 Right kidney  Left kidney

9 ABDOMINOPELVIC
REGIONS
The nine regions of the
abdominopelvic
region are smaller than
the four quadrants,
allowing for more
detailed discussion.
Theses are marked by
two parasagittal and
two transverse planes
centered around the
navel.

BODY CAVITY
Any fluid-filled space in a
multicellular organism
Helps protect, separate, and
support internal organs
Provide room for the organs to
adjust to changes in the
organism’s position
Bones, muscles, ligaments, and
various body cavities from one
another
2 MAJOR CAVITIES

DORSAL CAVITY
VENTRAL CAVITY
DORSAL CAVITY
The space around the brain and spinal.

2 Parts of Dorsal Cavity

 Cranial Cavity
 Spinal Cavity
CRANIAL CAVITY
 It is the space formed inside the skull and it
contains the brain and it’s surrounding the
meninges, portions of the cranial nerves,
arteries, veins, and nervous sinuses.
 It’s function is sensory information for
things such as taste, smell, hearing, and
sight.

8 CRANIAL BONES
 Frontal bone
 Occipital bone
 Sphenoid bone
 Ethmoid bone
 Two parietal bones
* The capacity of an adult human cranial cavity is 1,200-
 Two temporal bones 1,700 cm^3
SPINAL CAVITY
The space occupied by the
spinal cord enclosed by the
vertebrae column making
up the backbone.
Ventral cavity
Interior space in
the front of the
body.
Has inferior and
superior portions
divided by the
diaphragm.
VISCERA
Organs found inside the ventral cavity

Mesothelium
Consists of the pleura of the lungs, the
pericardium of the heart, and the
peritoneum of the abdominopelvic cavity.
Thoracic cavity
 Also called chest cavity is found by the ribs, the muscle of the chest, the sternum
(breast bone), and the thoracic portion of the vertebral column.

Pleural cavity
 A potential space between the layers of the pleura that surrounds a lung.

Mediastinum
 Central portion of the thoracic cavity between the lungs; sxtends from sternum
to vertebral column and from first rib to diaphragm; contains heart, thymus,
esophagus, trachea, and several large blood vessels.
Abdominopelvic cavity
 Subdivided into abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Abdominal cavity
 Contains stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine; the serous membrane of the
abdominal cavity is the peritoneum.

Pelvic cavity
 Contains urinary bladder, portions of the large intestine, and internal organs of
reproduction.
