THAT SUGAR FILM

Sugar is one of the important sources of energy in our body mostly, to our brain, muscles and in

our nervous system. It provides us the strength to do our daily activities and to keep us functioning all

throughout the day. Though sugar is important, the overconsumption of it results to changes that might

put our body into harm. Sugar is always present in every food and it comes in several forms that we eat so

it is necessary to balance our daily diet and include exercises in our routines.

After watching “That Sugar Film”, it really changed my perspective in food. I’ve come to realize

that there are hidden sugars in the food that we thought is healthy. First of all, I’ve learned the process of

intaking sugar and how it is broken down inside of our body. I’ve also learned the different forms of

sugar which is the glucose, lactose, sucrose and fructose and what happens after consuming these sugars.

It is mentioned in the film that the glucose is also known as our blood sugar, which then converts to

energy that is used to regulate muscle contraction and temperature regulation. Also, it is needed by our

brain in order to function normally and stimulate clearly. Another one is the lactose which can be

commonly found in dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurts that is responsible for a life-long

immunity. Next one is the sucrose that provides our body with all the energy that we needed to perform

physical and mental actions. Lastly, the fructose, which is present in every sweet food that we eat, is the

source of energy of our cells. Some say that sugars are harmful but some say that is not. But also, too

much sugar can increase our blood sugar levels. So, in my opinion, the intake of sugar must be well

balanced and must be controlled.

Watching this film made me question myself in how I view foods in different aspects. The high

sugar diet experiment in the film helped me realized the truth about sugar all the possible effects of it in

my body. The diet that he had showed me the results of an unexpected over consumption of sugar. That
60-day sugar diet resulted to a very high increase in weight, an initial result of a fatty liver, and a mental

and emotional problems that alarmed me because I am not in control of the food that I eat. What I mean

is, I don’t usually look at the nutritional contents so I don’t know how much sugar I take in every meal.

What shocked me the most is how sugar is broke down inside of our body and how these sugars will turn

into fats if the insulin cannot process the digestion anymore. What shocked me the most is when the main

character of the documentary met a teenager in Kentucky that consumes 12 packs of Mountain Dews per

day. Sugars also play a big part in tooth decay because of the bacteria that is in our teeth produces acids

which later on break down the tooth and produce a cavity, His loss of teeth made me realized how a

certain hobby or certain routine that is bad for our health can also damage our physical looks. In is also

included in the film that sweet foods make ourselves want more sweet foods. Sugar is really an additive

substance. In my perspective, this is true sugars makes the food more attractive to eat and it increases the

density of the food to be desirable. Also, as we eat something that has a sugar, our energy rises which

causes the hormone insulin to process and falls suddenly as quickly as possible which starts to release the

stress hormone like adrenalin which stimulates and tells our brain to eat more. The cycle continues and

these stress hormones are the reasons of the unexpected mood swings and emotional problems like

breakdowns, anxiety and depression.

“That Sugar Film” is really a good movie because while watching, we can actually reflect and

think of ourselves in the situations. The movie is good because it is so informative and artfully pieced

together. Overall, the film taught me to stay healthy and be aware of the food that I eat especially the

foods that contains “hidden sugars” that can actually make me struggle about myself in the future because

these foods can manipulate me. In my opinion, moderation is the message of the movie and after

watching the film, I literally told my self to control my sugar intake and limit it as less as I can per day. I

also told myself to always check the guidelines and nutritional contents of the food before buying it so

that I can be fully aware of the nutrients that will be stored in my body after eating. Yes, sugar is a

naturally occurring nutrient and it is really hard to monitor our food consumption because these days,
almost all of the foods that we eat is containing sugar so it is important to not only fix our dietary meals

but also, it is important to include exercise and proper fitness so that our body is ready and can be strong

enough to fight with diseases. The idea that sugar can possibly lead us to type 2 diabetes, obesity and

heart failures is alarming because we won’t know what will happen in the future if we don’t take good

care of our actions and decisions about our diet. It opened my eyes about the danger and harm that sugars

might bring when it is consumed overly. “That Sugar Film” taught me to make a difference. The movie

inspired me to do better in life. What I mean is, this movie served as my motivational guide and basis in

my health diet and health routines. Also, as a student and as a concerned citizen, I can possibly do things

and spread awareness to the people that needs it the most. Maybe I can be an instrument to help other

people that struggles with their food problems and encourage them to change their own perspectives

about their diet so that they can stay healthy and avoid chronic diseases that may attack them in the near

future.
