Executive Report:
Introduction to Indian The Indian market is one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the
Market world. Growth of the industrial sector and automotive sector and increasing
applications of technical textiles in the construction industry are the key factors in
demand for technical textiles. Exporters, however, need to be aware that India can
be a challenging market to enter. Indian Technical textile market has been
projected to be $14,35,094.25 in 2015-16, growing at CAGR of around 12%.
India’s technical market size accounts for 4% share in the worlds’ market. The
total growth potential textile market in India is estimated to be $2,30,083.00 for
2012-13 and is expected to grow at 16% till 2015-16.
Overall technical textiles and smart textile market has bright future in India.
Overall consumption in India expected to grow and the growth of various end use
industries offers good potential for the technical textile industry. India offers
many benefits for manufacturing of technical textile including availability of raw
material, competitive labor cost, modern production facilities etc. Beside further
Indian government, policies and support can further boost in technical textile in
India.
Technical textiles continue to be one of the fastest growing sectors within India’s
textile industry, currently, about 9 percent of the world’s total consumption of
technical textiles made in India. India’s market share in the technical textile sector
expected to grow from $11.6 billion in 2013 to $26 billion by 2017.
Currently, India’s technical textile industry based on producing commodity
products that are not very R&D intensive and therefore unlike conventional
textiles, technical textiles are an import intensive industry. Many products, like
Industrial filters, fabric for disposables and webbings, imported largely.
ASEAN has signed a free trade agreement with India. This agreement known as
the ASEAN India Free Trade Area (AIFTA). Thus this policy is benefit for the
trade Microteck products in India.

Market segments (list The technical textiles industry is import-intensive. In the last few years, the
major competitors in industry has witnessed a rise in imports - it stood at USD 1.4 Billion in Financial
each region) Year (FY) 2014-15 with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8% since
FY 2007-08. Though the country currently spends a significant amount on
imports, further investing in technology-heavy products can eventually reduce the
dependence. This presents a huge scope for import substitution.
In India, there are local manufacturers based in India and Foreign players
manufacturing in India. Make in India initiative has implemented to encourage
multinational as well as national companies to manufacture their products in
India.
India’s non-woven fabric is still in its early stages and is a sector of the textile
industry that relies heavily on imports. Non-woven fabrics used as applications in
the industrial filtration provide the best opportunities for Taiwan suppliers of
technical textiles.
The local Indian filtration market is highly fragmented and unorganised. Most
companies are small, not registered and run by an entrepreneur with a small size
of staff. These companies operate in their own niches and are quite cost-
competitive. It estimated that equipment made locally in India is about 30 per cent
cheaper than imported goods. This is partly due to lower manufacturing costs, and
partly because of high import duty on certain goods. However, most such
companies lack the capability (financing, know-how, technology, market
outreach) in order to compete with suppliers of more sophisticated systems

Challenges in Indian India’s shift to focus on the development and production of technical textiles
Market cannot be done with just monetary and tax incentives alone. In order successfully
compete globally in technical textiles, there needs to be investment from the
private sector. Entrepreneurs are reluctant to invest in the development and
production of technical textiles due to factors such as:
 Marketing: The marketing of technical textiles is more complex than
conventional textiles.
 Cost: Manufacturing technical textiles demands specific raw materials,
machinery and equipment that are not readily available in India. Importing
those materials is expensive.
 Time: The technical textile sector is still in its infancy, and it takes a lot of
time to commit to the research, development and production of a product.
It could take a minimum of five years before entrepreneurs could see a
return on their investment.

The domestic technical textile industry currently lacks the ability to fulfill
domestically the rising demand for technical textiles. Currently, 12 percent of the
technical textile products manufactured by non-woven technology in India, as
compared to 24 percent in the rest of the world. Therefore, India’s technical
textile Industry has a long way to go in order to be globally competitive in the
technical textile sector.

Challenges and Barriers to Technical Textile Exports:

Challenges facing suppliers of technical textiles who are interested in entering

the Indian market include:
 Price: Another challenge that U.S. suppliers of technical textiles must
address when entering the Indian market is price sensitivity. U.S.
suppliers need to offer competitive prices in order to compete in the
Indian market because both Chinese and European suppliers are deeply
entrenched in the market.

 Time: India’s customs officials generally require extensive

documentation, which may inhibit the flow of trade and lead to
processing delays. These delays are a consequence of India’s complex
tariff structure and multiple exemptions, which vary depending on the
product, user or intended use.

 Subsidies: India maintains several export subsidy programs that the

Indian textile industry may benefit from, including:

Exemptions from taxes for exporters in the SEZs (Special Economic Zone)
Duty drawback programs that appear to allow for drawback in excess of duties
levied on imported inputs.
Pre-shipment and post-shipment financing to exporters at a preferential rate.
Exemptions from customs duties and internal taxes, which tied to export
performance.
