A. Corporate/ Agency Background

HISTORY

The Development Bank of the Philippines, or DBP, was founded more than 65

years ago as a response to the numerous challenges brought about by turbulent times in

the Philippines and the rest of the world. Today, DBP’s continuing is viewed through the

eyes of its beneficiaries in Portraits of Progress. The entrepreneurs, public servant,

professionals and youth features in this book are a testament to DBO’ resolute mission to

uplift he Philippines and it’ people.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE, THE DBP WAY

Message from the DBP Chairman Jose A. Nunez Jr.

Through the years, the Development Bank of the Philippines, has become one of

the most formidable institutions serving the country today. This is mainly because of the

staunch dedication and integrity of its leader and employees. As Chairman of DBP, my

goal is to ensure that the government bank’s endeavors are aligned with the goals of the

current Duterte Administration: to promote good governance and elevate our

countrymen’s quality of life.

The whole DBP bound to reinforce existing practices that are consistent with

banking regulation, while rising to the challenge of balancing profits with its mandate of

enabling nationwide development. To this end, DBP continually initiates programs for a

vast range of more sustainable and long-term funding. The Bans aims to make difference

in a world of competitive economics and rapid change.

Through this initiatives DBP delivers on its mandate, and changes Filipino lives

for the better. With good governance underpinning our programs and actions, I am

confident that DBP, as the premier development financing institution in the country, will

continue to help seed the development of the country in a sustainable manner

PAINTINGTHE PORTRAITS OF PROGRESS, DBP

The Development Bank of the Philippines originally known as the Rehabilitation

Finance Corporation, or RFC, was the fledging republic’s timely response to the urgent

need of the people to rebuild their lives after the devastation of World War II.

In 1958, under the chairmanship of Gregorio S. Licaros, RFC became DBP,

appropriately named for its new incarnation as a development financing institution. DBP

shepherded the country through those difficult post-war reconstruction years. Since then,

various political and economic upheavals have tested DBP, but it has managed to stans its

fundaments, without surrendering its mandate as the steward of Philippine progress.

By the time DBP celebrated its golden year in 1997, it had become a universal

bank, involved in investment bank9ng, trust services, and treasury operations, as well as

raising fuds in the domestic and international markets. This book is no about financial

figures, through; it is about what these figures have meant to the beneficiaries of DBP’s

loans, grants, technical counsel, logistic support, and incalculable motivation and

inspiration.
