Learning Target (Competencies and Success Indicators)

At the end of the lesson the students can:
Compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids by;
 Identifying the unique characteristics of comets, meteors, and asteroids;
 Identifying the similarities and differences of comets, meteors, and asteroids based on their
characteristics and place of origin
 Describing how comets, meteors, and asteroids are alike and indifferent.

Integrated Faith in Learning (Values to be integrated)

On the fourth day God created the stars.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
A. Focus Lesson (MOTIVATION)

Linking Statement:
Besides the planets and the sun, there are other members of the solar system. The solar system also
consists of the minor celestial bodies. Although they are considered minor members, still they affect the
revolution of the planets around the sun in one way or another. Today you will learn about the minor
traveling bodies that are found beyond the solar system.

B. Guided Instruction
Concept Notes Or Concept Digest

Asteroids
- Made of rocks, ice, carbon, silica, and different materials.
- Originate from the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- The orbit is more rounded and less elliptical.

Comets
- Are icy bodies or objects that have irregular shape and varied sizes. It reflects light from the sun
at varying amounts depending on the size and composition.
- Usually come from the Oorth Cloud which beyond our solar system and a few from Kuiper Belt
which is just beyond our solar system.
- If a comet approaches the Sun it can generate a tail of gas and/or dust.
“Three parts of comets”
 Nucleus
 Coma
 Tail : Dust Tail and Gas Ion Tail

Meteoroids
- Are small chunks of rocks or metals traveling in outer space which originated from asteroids or
comets orbiting around the sun.
- Contain iron and nickel similar to some rocks on Earth.
- Orbit around the sun at various velocities.
Meteors
- A streak of light in the sky caused by a meteoroid during its atmospheric flight, also called a
shooting star or falling star.
Meteorite
- The part of a meteoroid or asteroid that survives the passage through our atmosphere and
reaches the Earth’s surface.
