BASIS:
In the earlier days, Basis was the set of middle ware programs and tools from SAP, in other
words, the platform. But, over time as SAP evolved the name got changed to SAP Web AS,
and then SAP Netweaver. Netweaver, as the name suggests, encompasses many different
functionalities within the platform.
One of the main components of Netweaver is still SAP_BASIS, the other three are SAP_ABA,
PI_BASIS (Basis plug-in) and ST-PI (SAP Solution Tools Plug-in).
Earlier, SAP systems administrators were called as SAP Basis Consultants, now as Netweaver
consultants.
ABAP programs are run on SAP's Netweaver application server (ABAP Stack), which is the
only publicly available ABAP runtime environment. Similarly Java programs are run on
SAP’s NW Application Server (Java Stack).
SAP Basis refers to the administration of SAP system that includes activities like
installation and configuration, load balancing, and performance of SAP applications
running on Java stack and SAP ABAP. This includes the maintenance of different services
related to database, operating system, application and web servers in SAP system
landscape and stopping and starting the system.
BASIS Services:
Basis provides services like communication with the operating system, database
communication, memory management, runtime collection of application data, web
requests, exchanging business data etc.
NetWeaver Intro:
SAP Basis or Netweaver are Integrated Technology Platform for different SAP version
The new version of BASIS is called the Netweaver. (i.e) SAP Basis is now called as Netweaver
Application server.
→Till ECC 4.6, It was called BASIS (consultants working as SAP-Admin were called SAP-BASIS)
→From 4.7, SAP introduced Web functionality and in Platform they added Web Application
Server (WAS)
→From ECC 5.0 (mySAP ERP) Yr 2004, SAP Added more functionality to Support Portal
(EP)/Integration (XI/PI/PO)/Analytics (BW/BI). The whole Platform was called NETWEAVER
(NW).
SAP Netweaver is the technology and Integration platform of SAP solutions. In other words,
NetWeaver is SAP's integrated technology platform.
Alias Names: Alias of BASIS is SAP Application Server Technology and alias of
Netweaver is SAP Web Application Server.
In Netweaver, both ABAP and Java stack can be monitored from one platform.
It is the underlying technology for all the products in the mySAP suite. All the
products in mySAP suite can run on a single instance of NetWeaver's, SAP Web
Application Server ,also known as "SAP WEBAs."
