Executive Summary

India offers astounding variety in virtually every aspect of social life. Diversities of ethnic, linguistic, regional,
economic, religious, class, and caste groups crosscut Indian society, which is also permeated with immense
urban-rural differences and gender distinctions. Differences between north India and south India are
particularly significant, especially in systems of kinship and marriage. Indian society is multifaceted to an
extent perhaps unknown in any other of the world’s great civilizations—it is more like an area as varied as
Europe than any other single nation-state. Adding further variety to contemporary Indian culture are rapidly
occurring changes affecting various regions and socioeconomic groups in disparate ways. Yet, amid the
complexities of Indian life, widely accepted cultural themes enhance social harmony and order.

One of the great themes pervading Indian life is social interdependence. People are born into groups—families,
clans, sub-castes, castes, and religious communities—and feel a deep sense of inseparability from these groups.
People are deeply involved with others, and for many, the greatest fear is the possibility of being left alone,
without social support. Psychologically, family members typically experience intense emotional
interdependence. Economic activities, too, are deeply imbedded in a social nexus. Through a multitude of
kinship ties, each person is linked with kin in villages and towns near and far. Almost everywhere a person
goes, he can find a relative from whom he can expect moral and practical support.

In every activity, social ties can help a person and the absence of them can bring failure. Seldom do people
carry out even the simplest tasks on their own. When a small child eats, his mother puts the food into his mouth
with her own hand. When a girl brings water home from the well in pots on her head, someone helps her
unload the pots. A student hopes that an influential relative or friend can facilitate his college admission. A
young person anticipates that parents will arrange his or her marriage. Finally, a person facing death expects
that relatives will conduct the proper funeral rites ensuring his own smooth passage to the next stage of
existence and reaffirming social ties among mourners.

This sense of interdependence extends into the theological realm. From birth onward, a child learns that his
“fate” has been “written” by divine forces and that his life is shaped by powerful deities with whom an ongoing
relationship must be maintained.

Most management theories discuss the impact of human behaviour in an organization, society, and community.
A business school which fails to address the behaviour of people in a society fails in its purpose - to develop a
manager with human values. In order to align this goal with its management programs, all students are required
to contribute to social initiatives as volunteers.

VESIM is a constituent of Vivekanand Education Society (VES), which was conceptualized to materialize the
dream of “social equality”. Following the footsteps of its parent organization, VESIM has been supporting
various social initiatives since its inception. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at VESIM has evolved to
include the participation of students, the local community, NGOs, and faculty members.

Principles of CSR

CSR at the Institute encourages students to imbibe values of enlightened leadership, which focuses on the
following principles:

 Respect for fellow humans and their views

 Willingness to reach out to people in need, and touch their lives through small contributions
 Ability to handle various challenging social situations, and creating workable solutions for them.

CSR Mission of VESIM

 CSR Cell of the Institute aspires to be known as a Center of Excellence, and has already initiated
collaborations with NGO’s for CSR projects in relevant areas such as education, health, environment,
and community development.
 VESIM empowers students by providing several opportunities to serve underprivileged sections of
society, and enhance their quality of life.
 Incorporating CSR in the curriculum of various management courses.

We For You Charitable Trust has enhanced my marketing and branding skills. There I learnt about
managing, anchoring, handling, patience & other related things but most precisely setting papers. While I
was doing my MBA and had theoretical knowledge of all the above topics, working here has given me
that practical exposure which provides detailed understanding of the topic. Also, working with a grassroot
organization at a very building block will show you the real meaning of development activities.

Global Goals

UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development Addressed:

 Goal 1 No poverty
Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. While the
number of people living in extreme poverty dropped by more than half between 1990 and 2015, too many
are still struggling for the most basic human needs.

 Goal 2 Zero hunger

The number of undernourished people has dropped by almost half in the past two decades because of rapid
economic growth and increased agricultural productivity. Many developing countries that used to suffer
from famine and hunger can now meet their nutritional needs. Central and East Asia, Latin America and the
Caribbean have all made huge progress in eradicating extreme hunger.

 Goal 3 Good health and well-being

Good health is essential to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda reflects the complexity and
interconnectedness of the two. It takes into account widening economic and social inequalities, rapid
urbanization, threats to the climate and the environment, the continuing burden of HIV and other infectious
diseases, and emerging challenges such as noncommunicable diseases. Universal health coverage will be
integral to achieving SDG 3, ending poverty and reducing inequalities. Emerging global health priorities
not explicitly included in the SDGs, including antimicrobial resistance, also demand action.

 Goal 4 Quality education

Achieving inclusive and quality education for all reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most
powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development. This goal ensures that all girls and boys
complete free primary and secondary schooling by 2030. It also aims to provide equal access to affordable
vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to a quality
higher education.
10

 Goal 5 Gender equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Empowering women and promoting
gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development. Ending all forms of discrimination
against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it also has a multiplier effect across all
other development areas.

 Goal 6 Economic growth

The SDGs promote sustained economic growth, higher levels of productivity and technological
innovation. Encouraging entrepreneurship and job creation are key to this, as are effective measures to
eradicate forced labour, slavery and human trafficking.

 Goal 7 Reduced inequalities

Income inequality has increased in nearly everywhere in recent decades, but at different speeds. It’s lowest
in Europe and highest in the Middle East. These widening disparities require sound policies to empower
lower income earners, and promote economic inclusion of all regardless of sex, race or ethnicity .Income
inequality requires global solutions. This involves improving the regulation and monitoring of financial
markets and institutions, encouraging development assistance and foreign direct investment to regions
where the need is greatest. Facilitating the safe migration and mobility of people is also key to bridging the
widening divide.

o Success Stories of NGO

Ruchira R. Nakte
Ex-Student

It's been 4 years since I left Chhabildas school. I can't forget the teachers and friends who put confidence in
me.When I joined I was in 2nd standard. At first I was scared because at that time I was worried about how to
speak English. I was unable to speak in English and to understand English. But the teachers were so helpful
that they make me free, comfortable and I learned to speak in English, understand English and write in
English. There were so many activities with studies for eg., sports, competitions, Ganpati fest, Diwali fest,
workshop etc. I got opportunity to learn different things. There were classes like drawing class, computer
lecture. We all students used to do so much masti and sometimes we got punished but I learned lots of things
that I can't forget. The best thing was when we used to go for competition and we won the 1st prize and the
happiness we saw in our teacher's eyes and that smile. I made so much of my memories with my friends.
Whatever I am writing in English now is possible because of the teachers of WE FOR YOU CHARITABLE
TRUST who helped me. Now I can speak better English and I can understand. Maybe the words are less to
thank the teachers who put confidence in me.

Sahil Suryakant Shigwan

Ex-Student

I joined the NGO when I was in 1st standard and studied from 1st standard to 8th standard. In those 8 years I
had many great experiences. I learnt many different things from the Workshops, these were the one of the
favorite things that I love. On summer workshop or Diwali workshop volunteers came and taught us many
activities, games and other things. In every workshop Miss brought something new for us. I was very weak in
Maths but could improve my studies after they started teaching on computers. Miss took many exercises of
English. Dipmala miss was an expert in Maths because of her I improved my studies in Maths. Farida miss
and Maria miss were the experts of English. Manisha miss was best in grammar and Nita miss was the best
teacher and the best cook also.Every New Year Miss brought something new and different for us. After
Sujaya Farida miss and other teachers created a new foundation called WE FOR YOU CHARITABLE
TRUST. Now I am the ex-student of Sujaya, still Miss calls me on every workshop of WE FOR YOU
CHARITABLE TRUST and I join every workshop of WE FOR YOU CHARITABLE TRUST and I enjoy it.
22

Janhavi Futak
Ex-Student

I remember when I joined the NGO I was in 2nd standard. I was feeling so bored to get up early in the
morning and go to school. But after some days I felt it so interesting where I could enjoy and learn
something. The teachers were very nice who encouragedus and supported us to speak better English. From
2nd standard to 8th standard the journey was really amazing which is unforgettable. Every time they used
some tricks to enjoy that particular subject which students understand very well.

I have a lot of memories connected with participating in drama competitions, dance competitions, sports. I
remember the drama we performed named as ’Bolbacchan’. We participated in dance competition and
performed Yoga fusion and won 2nd prize in it. The staff of WE FOR YOU CHARITABLE TRUST always
make some new plans for students.

Every day we used to gather in the hall and pray, do yoga, eat the snacks and the lectures were scheduled for
the day.I remember when we were in 8th standard we performed a drama for all teachers. We arranged gifts,
did drama, dance and many more activities. It was really an amazing experience for me. Now missing those
days, that masti, those beautiful and interesting sessions. At last I understood the motive behind those tricks
and plans just not to teach them but also to understand that concept and when we enjoy a particular thing it
becomes interesting and we observe and understand it more.

Challenges Faced by students working at NGO

Main Challenges Faced By the

NGO Lack of Funds

Many NGOs find it difficult to garner sufficient and continuous funding for their work.
Gaining access to appropriate donors is a major component of this challenge. They may have
limited resource mobilization skills locally, so instead they wait for international donors to
approach them. Current donors may shift priorities and withdraw funding. The NGO might suffer
from a general lack of project, organizational and financial sustainability.

Absence of Strategic Planning

Many NGOs suffer from the lack of a cohesive, strategic plan that would facilitate success
in their activities and mission. This renders them unable to effectively raise and capitalize on
financial support.

Poor Governance and Networking

A lack of effective governance is all too common in NGOs. Many have a deficit of
understanding as to why they must have a Board and how to set one up. A founder may be too
focused on running the NGO for their own purposes; however, governance is foundational to
transparency.

Poor or disorganized networking is another major challenge, as it can cause duplicated

efforts, time inefficiencies, conflicting strategies and an inability to learn from experience. The
more NGOs communicate with one another, with International Non-Governmental Organizations
(INGOs) and with the community at large, the more effective all of them can be. However, many
NGOs perceive INGOs as hindering or even threatening to their goals and missions.

Many NGOs do not maximize the use of current technologies that could facilitate better
communication and networking. More effective use of technology can assist NGOs in staying
abreast of important regional, national and global concerns.

Limited Capacity

NGOs often lack the technical and organizational capacity to implement and fulfill their
mission, and few are willing or able to invest in training for capacity building. Weak capacity
affects fundraising ability, governance, leadership and technical areas.

Development Approaches

Many NGOs favor a “hardware” approach to development through building infrastructure

and providing services instead of empowering people and institutions locally. Overall, their
development approaches are not as flexible, sustainable and relevant to the community as they
could

Solutions to these challenges

Grant-- Funding

In order to receive grant funding, an NGO must do the following:

1. Locate Opportunities. Find an appropriate grant and funder for their focus and mission.

2. Solid Concept Note / First Round Application. NGOs must answer all criteria and
provide all of the information the donor/funder requires. Not following the guidelines will result
in immediate disqualification.

3. Proposal. Once an NGO passes the first application state, a proposal will be requested.
The proposal must be well-written and error-free. Most importantly, it must contain all of the
necessary elements to show the donor that the NGO has a strategy and high-quality team
members.

Challenges such as poor governance, a lack of strategic planning, and poor networking can all
be addressed through:

Capacity Building

Capacity building and training can help to provide crucial new skills. NGOs can then more
readily train staff and cultivate the necessary skills within the organization to address challenges
going forward.

On-Demand Advice From Experts

The ability to reach out for needed advice and guidance whenever required during a project or to
optimize NGO operations is extremely valuable. Access to qualified experts will inspire
confidence in donors and contribute to the project’s success. NGOs will naturally become more
efficient, streamlined and effective.

Information, Communication and Technology

All NGOs should be using a minimum of Internet, email, a basic website and relevant social
medial platforms.

Income Generation

NGOs with assets can use any surplus to help generate income. Renting out buildings, offering
training, providing consultancy, creating and selling products and trading on your name are just a
few examples.

If your NGO is facing any of the challenges described above, Maxim pact can help. We
offer training and capacity building to strengthen your organization and assist you in meeting
your goals.

Learnings and Experience

 Managerial Skills you developed during this project

Our work if we compare with the corporate work was more of team and knowledgeable
work, so in accordance to that we grasped the following skills:
 Excellent Grasp of Core Values of the Business.
 Ability to Build Rapport with Faculty members.
 Precise Time Management Skills.
 Skilled Communication.
 Effective Listening Skills.
 Ability to Cultivate Prospects.

 Has this project changed or diverted or added some new dimension in your career
Plan?
Yes, working in the NGO I met some really wonderful people who inspired me to push my
limits. They taught me to think about the society first and myself later. There were times
when success got into my head and I became a little demanding, but I later understood that
things don't work out unless you are cool headed and humble. In a way volunteering has not
only taught me about the various challenges in the society but it is also helping me improve
myself as a person every single day. I find a lot of happiness doing my bit for the society.
The joy that I get when I meet young kids or old people in orphanages or old age
homes is soul touching. I've understood that relationships are not always made through
blood. I'm indeed lucky to have chosen volunteering. Had I not have been with this
NGO, I don’t think I would have been the person that I am today.

 Over all experience.

Overall it was a good learning experience, we understood the value of all the vocational courses
they provided and how it can help us make a good earning career. The mindset of people living
here is very different than ours and hence it was a good experience understanding their point of
view and also sometimes making them understand our point of view. We also got to know that
how people here are keen in studying and making something big out of their life.

 After doing this project did you realized that you are feeling more responsible citizen
and have more responsibility towards society?
Yes, after doing Yuva for Seva I did realize that there are so many problems face by our
society and we as MBA students can do so much to create a change in our society. As a
responsible MBA student, I have understood that what my responsibilities are. The
following are my ways to combat those issues:
 Business skills are transferrable and important
 Real issues are not apparent
 Don't shift for an easy life
 Money matters
 Empathy is non-negotiable
 Look for a cultural fit

 If you get some opportunity would you like to work in such organization for short
period of time say a month in a year to contribute for larger purpose of societal
welfare?
Yes, we would like to come back to the NGO and help the NGO in assistance to their
courses and modules. We even kept a proposal to the NGO to give us an opportunity to
come in weekends and help the students .
