1. IT IS SAID THAT THE NOLI WAS BASED ON TRUTH, THAT IS, IT WAS
It is said that "Noli Me Tangere" was based on truth because it was a true story of
Philippine conditions during the last decades of Spanish rule. Places, characters and situations
really exist. The Characters were drawn by Rizal from person who actually existed during this
time.
-Maria Clara was Leonor Rivera, in real life she became unfaithful, unlike the heroine of
the novel and married an Englishman.
-Ibarra and Elias represented Rizal himself.
-Padre Salvi was identified by Rizalist as Padre Antonio Piernavieja, the hated
Augustinian friar in Cavite who was killed by the revolution
-Capitan Tiago was Capitan Hilario Sunico of San Nicholas
-Doña Victorina was Doña Agustina Medel.
The two brothers Basilio and Crispin were the Crisostomo brothers of Hagonoy.
-Padre Damaso was typical of a domineering friar during the days of Rizal who was
arrogant, immoral, and Anti-Filipino.
He made the novel to expose all the doings of the Spaniards in order to reawaken our
senses. Rizal dedicated this novel to his fatherland and he sacrificed his personal needs in order
for him to make a difference for our country.
