Language devices

(1) Simile
When you compare two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’ for example He ran like a
Cheetah, He was as big as a mountain.
(2) Metaphor
When you compare 2 things by saying something is something. Eg. My
daughter is a princess .
(3) Oxymoron
When you have two opposites side by side no words in between. In Romeo
and Juliet, we learn how love hurts. I have dark light.
(4) Juxtaposition
When you compare two contrasting ideas within a paragraph.
(5) Rhetorical question
When you ask a question in a piece of writing.
(6) Alliteration
You have words in a row stating with same letter. These words can have
words betn. The big blue ball bounced blissfully down the road.
(7) Sibilance
It is an alliteration but of the ‘S’ letter or the S sound. Snake slithered
silently and slowly down the road.
(8) Personification
When you give a non-human thing a human quality. The pen is laying on the
table. The door was waving at me. The leaves on the tree were looking at me.
(9) Hyperbole
When you exaggerate.
(10) Onomatopoeia
The words that describe sounds. The clock went tick tock.
(11) Repetition
When you repeat a word or a phrase throughout the piece of writing.
