PROCESS CHECK REPORT

AUDIT FINDINGS
Details Of Check Result / Remarks Action Required
For the SRHS CR110 process are
both the etching and plating
solutions either 220-235g/l - low
density or 250-260g/l - high
density of CrD3 in water.

For the HEEF-25 process is the

solution 245-255g/l C rO3 in water.

Is the drag out bath initially made

up of de-ionised water.

Is the neutriliser bath made up of

37-38g/l of sodium carbonate or
sodium sulphite in water.

Is the de-watering fluid in

accordance with BAEP 9038.

For the initial bath make up of

SRHS is the following adhered to:-
i) Tank filled 2/3rd full of water
and heated to no hotter than
o
65 C.
ii) Chromate salts slowly added at
either 25-26.6kg (100 litres) or
28.5-29.5kg (100 litres).
iii) Vigorous stirring carried out
whilst maintaining the
temperature.
iv) Balance of water added up to
the working level.

Once filled is the liquor

continuously stirred for 3 hours to
ensure all salts are in solution.

PROCESS CHECK REPORT

AUDIT FINDINGS

Is there a temp indicator and is it
calibrated.

Are there ammeters and

voltmeters and are they
calibrated.

Is the specific gravity either 1.152 -

o
1.167 or 1.170 - 1.185 at 55 C for
low/high density solutions
respectively.

Are replenishments made of salts

to keep the specific gravity.

Has the solution been checked

using "dummies" prior to using for
full production (ref section
1.4.2.4).
For the initial bath make up of
HEEF-25 is the following adhered
to:-
i) Tank filled 2/3rd full of water
and heated to between 50 and
60oC.
ii) 27kg of HEEF-25 added to
every 100 litres of water and
stirred until the solid has
dissolved.
iii) Additional supplementary
catalysts added by the chemist.
iv) Further water to raise the level
to its correct working volume.

Are the maintenance solids added

to the solution (M & T HEEF).

PROCESS CHECK REPORT

Are the components degreased
prior to stress relieving to BAEP
9049, 9053 or 9069.
Are the items crack tested to
BAEP 2501 or 2502.

Are the items shot peened to

BAEP 2001 prior to plating.

If required by drawing are the

items stress relieved as per Table
1 of BAEP 1519.

After stress relieving are the items

non-metallic grit blasted to BAEP
2002 or 2004.

Areas that do not require plating,

are they masked accordingly and
holes stopped off using bungs.

Are the etching/plating solutions

used stirred at least once every 8
hours or agitated.
Is the surface area of the anode
similar to that of the area to be
plated and the bottom of the
anodes at least 13mm higher than
the components to be plated.

Are the anodes approximately

130mm away from the component
in the solution.
Are the ferrous components for
SPHS CR110 anodically etched at
-2
0.2-0.3Acm for 30-60 seconds.

Are they then transferred
immediately into the plating
solution with the current density
maintained at 0.3-0.8 Acm -2.

If only one bath in use then is the

current reversed after etching.
For non-ferrous, is only the plating
used without etching and 0.3-0.6
Acm-2 maintained.

For ferrous components using

HEEF 25 is the same process
utilised as with SRHS CR110
except current densities as
follows:-
etching 0.15-0.3Acm -2
plating 0.3-0.6Acm -2

For non-ferrous components is

the process as per that above
except the current density used is
0.3-0.6Acm-2.

After plating are the components

rinsed in a drag out bath,
neutrilising bath and then rinsed in
both cold and hot water, then
dried.

If required are items de-masked

followed by vapour degreasing.

If required are the items de-

embrittled within 4 hours of the
completion of plating in
accordance with Table 2 of BAEP
1519.

Are the items then inspected
visually for adherance, show no
signs of flaking, heat treatment or
grinding, pits, blisters or sharp
growths.

When examined with the naked

eye, do the items appear crack
free.

Are periodic test pieces

processed to determine the
thickness/quality checks.

Is the hardness determination

greater than or equal to 800Hv for
the plating or where fatigue
restoration has been carried out is
the hardness greater than or
equal to 600Hv.

Are samples of the bath solutions

taken in accordance with
Appendix B i.e.,
i) Density (daily).
ii) Chromic acid & sulphate
contents (weekly).
iii) Trivalent chrome, iron, nickle
copper and chloride contents (bi-
monthly).

Are all these checks carried out in

duplicate.

If applicable is the defective
coating stripped using:-
70-150g/l of sodium carbonate or
hydroxide or a mixture of the 2 in
clean water upto a temperature of
65oC whilst applying 6 volts.

If stripping is carried out

immediately after plating is the de-
embrittlement undertaken after
stripping.

If there is a delay, is the de-

embrittlement carried out between
plating and stripping and, after
stripping before replating.

Once replated then are the items

de-embrittled once again.

Are the operators/technicians

given satisfactory training prior to
use of the plating facilities.
