Installation of this unit should be undertaken in conjunction with your Fleet Operations
Manager.
1. Equipment List
• 24V dc supply
• Self-amalgamating tape
2. Safety Notice
The procedures in this guide must be observed during installation, operation, service and repair
of this equipment. Failure to comply with these procedures violates safety standards of design,
manufacture and intended use of this equipment. Pole Star Space Applications Limited assumes
no liability for the customer’s failure to comply with these procedures.
3. Unit Description
The Pole Star ST6100 is a satellite transceiver with integral GPS receiver. In normal operation, it
sends periodic position reports via the Inmarsat satellite constellation to Pole Star’s web server.
4. Installation
For reference, the dimensions of the mounting bracket are shown in Figure 5.
1. Select a suitable location for the transceiver installation, taking into consideration the
following:
• The transceiver requires a clear and unobstructed view of the sky in order to
communicate with the Inmarsat and GPS satellite constellations.
• Obstructions within the look angle range (see Figure 2) are unavoidable in most
marine installations. To minimise obstruction, apply the following rule:
Example:
For a pole of 10cm diameter, the safe distance is 29 x 0.1 = 2.9 metres.
This rule ensures that the obstruction covers no greater than 2 degrees arc.
• If supplied transceiver cable is extended the total length should not exceed 30m.

3. Remove the 2 A fuse from the fuse holder on the cable (store in a safe place).
4. Securely fasten the mounting bracket to the vessel superstructure and mount the transceiver
on the bracket using the 4 screws and nylock nuts provided. Use silicon grease to protect
the connector pins, attach the connector to the base of the transceiver and seal it with self
amalgamating tape.
5. Run the 10-core cable from the transceiver to the 24V dc power source as shown in Figure 1.
7. Replace the 2 Amp fuse in the fuse holder to power the unit up.
8. When the transceiver is powered up the LED will briefly flash (see Figure 4).
9. Once installed, allow approximately 10 minutes for the first position report to arrive.
10. Confirm that your Fleet Operations Manager (or Pole Star distributor/person responsible for
the operation of the system) has received the position report.
Please Note:
When the vessel is in port there is an increased probability of communication problems as
there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources from both land and vessel-
based communications equipment. High power VHF, UHF and microwave equipment can all
cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large structures can also cause
problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite.

Pole Star Space Applications Commercial-in-Confidence ST6100 Installation Guide
The ST6100 operates automatically and does not require any user intervention in normal
operation.
• When it is powered up, the LED will briefly flash (see Figure 4).
• If the LED is flashing, please check your power supply is providing a constant
24V DC output.
• If you have any problems with the ST6100, please contact your Fleet Operations
Manager (or Pole Star distributor/person responsible for the operation of the
system) giving details of the vessel name, ship owner/company, transceiver
Mobile ID (see Figure 4) and the nature of the problem.
Note:
The ST6100 must NOT be painted as this may inhibit transmission/reception of satellite signals.
