19 Helping Others to Become Loyal to Jehovah (Symposium)

—Unbelieving Mates

[PLEASE NOTE: This talk includes an interview. Follow instructions in

assignment letter]

PURPOSE OF THIS SYMPOSIUM (1 min.)

Today’s theme highlights an important way that we show our loyalty to
Jehovah [Read Psalm 145:10]
Loyalty will move us to praise Jehovah by our words and conduct
This can move others to attach themselves to Jehovah (1Pe 2:12)
This symposium will discuss how we can praise Jehovah by assisting
unbelieving mates, former Bible students, inactive ones, and our
family members
There is great potential for such ones to join us as loyal servants
of Jehovah because they have already had some exposure to the truth

INSIGHT NEEDED (1 min.)

Having insight will help us to be empathetic (Pr 16:20-23)
Many unbelievers try to be good marriage mates and parents
They may have their own deeply held religious beliefs
Their view of Jehovah’s Witnesses may be influenced by uninformed or
prejudiced associates
Some resent that their spouse devotes time to worship that used to be
spent with the family

HOW TO HELP (4 min.)

The best way to witness to an unbelieving mate, at least initially,
may be by our conduct [Read 1 Peter 3:1, 2]
An unbeliever should be able to see that his or her mate is more
loyal now than before (Eph 5:31; w01 10/1 23 82)
Brothers can take an interest in unbelieving husbands; sisters, in
unbelieving wives
Look for opportunities to show kindness and to offer practical help,
even if the unbeliever is opposed (Ro 12:20, 21; w12 2/15 29 814)
Interest can be shown by occasionally inviting a Christian and his
or her mate to a meal
Do not feel that you must quickly turn the conversation toward
spiritual subjects (km 11/10 6 84)
Some unbelievers may accept your invitation to study the Bible after
you have developed a rapport with them
Others may need to have their interest in the Bible cultivated by
several conversations on topics of interest to them, such as the
future, the family, or good government
Elders especially should reach out to unbelieving mates (km 11/10 6 85)
Unbelievers may be receptive to Scriptural encouragement from elders
when experiencing difficulties, such as health problems or despair
over the death of a loved one

INTERVIEW (2 min.)
[Interview a former unbeliever who became interested in the truth
because of the good conduct of his or her mate or the words or actions
of a publisher. Ask: How did you feel when your husband (or wife)
became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses? What caused you to become
interested in the truth?]

A THREEFOLD CORD (1 min.)

Seldom does an unbelieving mate come into the truth solely because of
the efforts of his or her spouse
No. 19 Unbelieving Mates—Page 2

Your efforts to assist an unbelieving mate may bring a great blessing

to him or her and to the family
When a husband and wife are united in their loyalty to Jehovah,
the result is a strong, happy union that honors the Originator of
marriage (Ec 4:12)
Brother will now discuss how we can help former Bible
students to become loyal to Jehovah
