Background of the Case


El-Alamein is one of the leading companies in the
middle- east in the printing and packaging industry.
Until June 2006 the company had never had an IT
department .The company CEO decided to go digital from
July 2006 and established several infrastructural
component such as the computer network and a back-up
system and security policy and IT infrastructure.

IT infrastructure enabled the implementation of various


systems including time and attendance system and it
saved a lot of lost working hours and linked to the ERP.
With a view to targeting the international market, the
company has developed a web site (www.elalamein.net).
The web site helps many functional departments
including HR, Sales and customer services.
E-business suite was chosen as the best enterprise
resource planning (ERP) system to meet the company
information and business requirements. El-alamein
focused on project management documentation, post
implementation performance measurement and IT
consultant involvement in the project

The company experienced some difficulties and


challenges during the implementation and it overcome
them robustly. Having been digitalized, the company has
reduced investment risk, strengthened process
integration and improved productivity and efficiency.

Since 1921, El-Alamein Co. has led the revolution of
Printing and Packaging industry in Egypt. EL-ALAMEIN
Company is the approved supplier to the biggest
international companies in the field of fast food. The
company produces paper cups for cold drinks (soda
drink, juices) and hots drinks (tea, coffee) as well as all
ice-cream packages with their different shapes and sizes.

The company also produces 8 corners carton boxes to


pack big and small sandwiches, and burger in addition to
the different shapes and sizes of fried potatoes boxes.
Elalamein has got a lot of prizes and certificates from
multinational companies. Such as: Unilever Egypt, Royal
institute of public health.

Answer
Here different Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

ERP is principally an integration of business management
practices and modern technology. Information Technology (IT)
integrates with the core business processes of a corporate house
to streamline and accomplish specific business objectives.
Consequently, ERP is an amalgamation of three most important
components; Business Management Practices, Information
Technology and Specific Business Objectives.

phases etc,

 Delay in functional areas.

To mitigate those risk factors some steps should be


taken like as:

 Identify key persons from all functional areas who will act as
change agent and take the responsibility of persuading other
employees of the importance of the system.
 Train users to use the new system and understand how the
new business process will be affected.
 Foster end user project participation by involving more
employees than just senior management in the decision
analysis and implementation.
 Implementation of various technologies to reduce investment
risk and that improve productivity and efficiency.

established strategic relationships with multinational
companies.

The establishment of IT/IS of the company has


resulted in an increase in company value by more than
EGP 10 million. This is nearly five times what has been
spent so far on IT/IS, making the return on investment of
IT/IS over 500 percent.

It also add the value for Improving Productivity,


Speed and Performance in the field of manufacturing,
HR,SCM, Financials, Project, CRM and Data warehousing
etc for EL-ALAMEIN.

recommend that:

 IT/IS helps the company with many functional departments


including marketing, HR, sales and customer services.

 IT helps business become more flexible and productive by


coordinating and integrating business process.

 With IT elements, El-alamin Company has established


strategic relationship with multinational companies.

 With the touch of IT, the company has reduced investment


risk.

 Though the company faced some changes on


implementation, they overcome the situation by taking
several steps.

 After all, IT played a tremendous contribution to the overall


development of the company.

 The scope of customization is limited in several


circumstances.

 The present business processes have to be rethought to


make them synchronize with the ERP.
