Language acquisition is influenced by cultural and technological changes. Historically, psychologists like Piaget observed how children acquire language. Today, trends include Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) which teaches subjects through language to support multiple intelligences. This promotes interpersonal skills, cultural understanding, and civic literacy. Issues in language acquisition include differing rates of competence versus performance, and lacking cultural understanding when speaking. Gender differences in language are also debated, and awareness of gender-sensitive language aims to precisely express gender relationships. Recognizing diverse cultural identities adds complexity to understanding modern language acquisition.

ISSUES and TRENDS ON LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
By: JACQUELINE F. BUCAO/2nd sem2015
In this current situation, in terms of language acquisition and leaning, has changed as it goes with the cultural evolution or revolution. The history gives practical empirical observations perceived and as shown by great psychologists like Piaget, Brunner etc. to make clear picture of how language is acquired and learned by children and adult as well. Language is an indispensable aspect of a culture because it serves as a remarkable tool to build sense of unity despite the grand differences. Language has its own system though which may vary in how people understand and perform in terms of duration learning and teaching process. With this it would be very beneficial to recognize the issues and to recognize few of the trends in Language acquisition. At first, like any other learning field, it is understood that every child is graded according to his/her competence and performance. Competence is known to be the system of ideas which are intangible like the grammar, vocabulary, syntax. However, students normally get the ideas most often yet seem to get stuck when performance tasks are being employed. This is the common issue in acquiring language because the people who are uttering words aside that they lack understanding the meaning they also lack cultural understanding which should be properly directed. The world has been changed from monologue to dialogue learning and now to the multi-faceted means of learning. The presence of the technology and the invasion of new learning contents has relatively expanded the traditional learning and teaching patterns. The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) immerged to keep the integration of different learning subjects such as history, geography, etc through the use of language. In one way or another it supports the idea of Multi- intelligences of the 21st century students. This trends promotes the appropriate interpersonal skills to be used and to secure cultural understanding and sensitivity, therefore, making the student gain civic literacy, global awareness to work independently, to adopt changes, and work in diverse groups to lead and to show accountability to task. Fundamentals of acquiring language showed much connectivity from one point to the next which some of them made opposing point of view in which lead to the idea of how formal and functional the acquisition may be, how internal explanation may differ from the external explanation, how acquisition of language make impact to the acquisition of communication skills and the importance of specific faculty of language and general cognitive capacity. The world is bounded with vast change which lead to a number of cultural revolution, the spreading of multiculturalism, interculturalism and globalization, communication and interaction of people with different cultural background become an important issue. In CLIL, acquisition of language is basically relevant to the contemporary era wherein learners are focused on web. Learners should be directed to the content of the topic, the communication in terms of what type of language use (science language, mathematical language, history etc), the cognitive skills required in learning the topic be it classifying, cause and effect etc. and most importantly the cultural focus (from local understanding to foreign context). Then comes the language and gender. The gender differences in conversational interaction has been pointed out in many debates nowadays. The social media has been a venue for all the controversies on language preferences. The idea of sexism which had sprouted in 18th century in the struggle of women to fight for their rights and privileges as human. Which then later extends so far now that brought to the idea on gender sensitivity and awareness in the pursuit to achieve equality in all forms. Take this for example the Gay Lingo, some people are uttering these type of inverted words yet unknown to its meaning that exclusively for the group. Thus, there comes the awareness of gender sensitivity using the approach Gender-Sensitive Language (linguistic approach on gender). This is the means to express gender relationships with precision. Indeed the issues arising from acquiring the language are still served as benchmark to understand and cater how student learn the language effectively and to identify and build connections of how these 21st century individuals acquire language in connection in the technological driven arena in which contributes another realm of issues on Language acquisition. The perspective in understanding how the language is being acquired has changed gradually and gradually progress to be very complex because of the existence recognizing the other cultural and societal identity.
