Caterpillar 3003, 3011, 3013, 3014, and 3024 Engines

Objectives:
Upon the completion of this module the student will be able to perform the following
tasks in a written exam with at least 80% accuracy. The student will also be
required to be able to perform adjustments and settings in a hand-on lab
environment.

List and describe the features of the 3003, 3011, 3013, 3014, 3024 engine
components including:
• Emissions Compliance Level
• Bore/Stroke dimensions
• Cylinder head and valves
• Cylinder block and main bearing design
• Crankshaft arrangement
• Pistons/Rods/Rings
• Cooling system

Describe Fuel Injection Pump timing and adjustment.


Explain fuel pump operation and describe fuel system components.

Tasks Required by the Instructor to Meet the Objectives

The instructor will present PowerPoint Lesson #2, using the course book slides. He will
show and explain the following points:
• Introduce the 3003, 3011, 3013, 3014 and 3024 Tier 1 engine family
o List examples of applications where these engines may be found
o Identify the basic features and layout with emphasis on model
identification including bore/stroke and injection system type (indirect
injection)

Using the course book slides; discuss the following systems and components of the
3003, 3011, 3013, 3014 and 3024 Tier 1 engine family
• Cylinder head
• Cylinder block
• Pistons, rings, and connecting rods
• Crankshaft
• Timing case and gear train
• Fuel injection pump operation and timing
• Cooling system
• Miscellaneous components
