Banana Hammock Beauty Bag

The Banana Hammock Beauty Bag has a timeless style that can be made either feminine or masculine
to suit the needs of the user. The generous size makes this the perfect travel toiletry bag, cosmetic
bag, or dopp kit. The interior has a bias binding finish, which ensures you won't have a saggy lining!

 Open the pattern using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Print the pattern pieces at 100%. Measure the
test square on each page of pattern pieces to make sure each of them measures exactly 1” square and
cut out all pattern pieces. Be sure to read all directions before beginning. Seam allowance is ¹⁄2”
unless indicated otherwise. When topstitching, increase your stitch length. I usually use a length of 4 for
topstitching on fabric. All topstitching will be ¹⁄8” from the seam unless otherwise stated.

SUPPLIES:
1/3 Yard quilting cotton for Exterior (listed fabric requirement is for all one color exterior)
1/2 Yard quilting cotton for Lining
1 Yard fusible woven interfacing (Pellon Shape-Flex SF-101)
2/3 Yard Sew-In foam stabilizer (Pellon Flex Foam Sew-In FF77)
10” or longer all purpose zipper
Coordinating Thread
Optional - Fusible Web (Heat’n Bond Lite)

CUT THE FOLLOWING: (Measurements given are width x height.)

● From exterior fabric:

○ Two (2) Main Panels
○ One (1) Gusset
○ One (1) Handle 6.5” x 3”
○ One (1) Tab 2.5” x 3”
● From lining fabric:
○ Two (2) Main Panels
○ One (1) Gusset
○ Two (2) 24” x 2.25” Binding Strips (cut on the bias - see page 6)
● From fusible woven interfacing:
○ Four (4) Main Panels
○ Two (2) Gussets
○ One (1) Handle
● From foam stabilizer:
○ Two (2) Main Panels
○ One (1) Gusset

CUT PIECES AND FUSE INTERFACING

Cut the fabric and interfacing pieces as indicated. Fuse woven interfacing to the wrong side of all four Main
Panels, both Gussets, and the Handle. Trim 1/4” off the top edge of both of the foam Main Panels. This will
help to reduce bulk where the zipper is attached.
1) Run a zig-zag stitch along the top edge of each of the
foam Main Panels to compress the top edge along where the
zipper will be attached.

Then baste the foam to the exterior Main Panels sewing

down one side, along the bottom, and back up the other side
using a zig-zag stitch. Alternatively, you can iron Heat n’
Bond Lite to your foam and iron it to your exterior fabric
pieces.

Also baste or adhere the foam to the exterior Gusset.

 2) Place the zipper right side down along the top edge of one
exterior Main Panel, with the zipper pull to the left. If you are using
a 10” zipper, center it. If you are using a longer zipper, place the
stop on the closed end a little more than 1/2” from the end. Trim
the other end to be even with the edge of the Main Panel. Sew the
zipper on using a 1/4” seam allowance.

It may be helpful to use a zipper foot, and move the zipper pull out
of the way as you sew.

3) Place a lining Main Panel on top of the exterior Main Panel with
attached zipper, right sides together and matching all edges. Clip
or pin the top straight edges, with the zipper sandwiched between,
and sew using a 1/4” seam allowance.

4) Press both Main Panels away from the zipper with wrong sides
together. Topstitch along the zipper using a 1/8” seam allowance,
sewing through the exterior and lining fabrics.

5) Repeat steps 2-4 to attach the other exterior and lining Main
Panels to the other side of the zipper.

 6) a) Fold the Tab in half, bringing the 2.5” edges together and
press. b) Open the Tab and bring each of the 2.5” edges in to the
center crease and press. c) Fold in half again along the original
crease and press with the raw edges contained inside. d) Top-
stitch along each of the long folded edges. Fold in half, matching
the raw edges, and press.

7) Place the Tab centered over the closed end of the zipper,
matching the raw edges and baste in place. Clip the lining and
exterior Main Panels together all the way around, with wrong sides
together. Baste the lining and exterior Main Panels together using
a 1/4” seam allowance.

8) a) Fold the Handle in half, bringing the 6.5” edges together and
press. b) Open the Handle and bring each of the 6.5” edges in to
the center crease and press. c) Fold in half again along the
original crease and press with the raw edges contained inside and
topstitch along each of the long folded edges.

9) Using the Gusset pattern piece, mark the Handle placement

lines on the exterior Gusset within the seam allowance. Matching
the raw edges, pin the Handle in place. The handle will bow up
away from the Gusset.

 10) Place the exterior and lining Gussets wrong sides together,
matching all raw edges, and pin or clip together. Baste together
using a 1/4” seam allowance, sewing all the way around the edges.

11) Using the pattern pieces, mark the centers on the long edges
and short edges of the Gusset and the Main Panel bottoms (the
zipper is the other center mark).

12) With exterior sides together, first match the marks on the short
ends of the Gusset with the centers of the zipper and pin or clip in
place. The side of the Gusset with the Handle attached will be
pinned to the side of the zipper with the zipper pull, when the zipper
is closed.

OPEN THE ZIPPER!!

13) Now, match the center marks of the bottom of the Main Panels
with the center marks of the long sides of the Gusset and pin or
clip. Then pin or clip all around to attach the Gusset to the Main
Panels.

 14) This is how the ends will look. It is easiest to sew the Main
Panels to the Gusset in a specific way.

Make two marks on each end as indicated by the white marks on

the picture to the left. They don’t have to be precisely placed, just
about halfway down the end and within the seam allowance.

15) With the Gusset facing up, start sewing at one of the marks
from step 14 and sew around the top curve to the other mark on
that same end. Backstitch at the start and stop, and repeat to sew
the top curve on the other end of the Gusset.

16) See the stitching on the photo to the left.

17) Now flip so the Main Panel side is facing up and start sewing
at the end of one line of stitching from Step 15. Sew around one
bottom corner, along the bottom of the Main Panel, and around the
other bottom corner, stopping when you reach the existing stitching
on that end.

Repeat to sew the bottom of the other Main Panel.

 18) Looking at the seam allowance, there is one line of stitching
1/4” in from the edge, from where the exterior and lining were
basted together. Carefully cut along this line of stitching to trim the
seam allowance down to 1/4”. This will help to reduce some of the
bulk that will be inside the binding.

19) When you cut the bias binding, you will be cutting at a
45-degree angle to the selvage edge of the fabric. The reason for
cutting on the bias is so that the binding will stretch nicely around
the curves.

Cut two 24“ x 2.25” strips on the bias.

20) Place the strips, right sides together, forming a 90-degree

angle. Mark a line from the top right corner where the pieces meet,
to the bottom left corner where they meet. Sew right along this line.

21) Unfold the pieces to make sure they were sewn correctly.
Then trim the tails off the back, about 1/4” away from the stitching.
Press the seam open.

 22) If the unattached ends of the binding are cut at an angle, cut
the angled edges off. Press one short end of the binding under by
1/2”, then press the binding in half lengthwise, matching raw edges.

23) Starting with the short end that was folded under, pin or clip the
binding all the way around the seam, matching the raw edges.

24) When the binding is clipped all the way around the seam, trim
the raw end so that it overlaps the folded end of the binding by only
about 1”, then tuck the raw end into the other end of the binding
that was folded under.

Sew all the way around the bag using a 1/4” seam allowance to
attach the binding.

25) Once the binding is attached all the way around, fold the folded
edge of the binding over the seam allowance of the bag so that it
just covers the stitching and clip in place all the way around.

 26) Once the entire binding is clipped down, there are two ways to
stitch it on. The most precise method would be to hand stitch the
folded end of the binding down. I prefer to use a ladder stitch when
I use this method.

Alternatively, you can machine stitch the binding, with the

unattached edge facing up, about 1/8” or less away from the fold. It
is helpful to cut the binding from the same fabric as the lining and
use a coordinating thread. (Do as I say, not as I do!!)

Turn the bag right side out and press really well.
