Culture

The culture of the Dominican Republic in terms of its people and customs is nourished

by the mixture of Spanish, African and Taino roots. The Dominican Republic of this

was the first Spanish colony in America. Certain riches brought by the Spanish

colonizers that were unknown to the native inhabitants practically eliminated the

majority of the island's indigenous people; so the colonizers began to import small

quantities of African slaves to replace the natives. After the Haitian liberation of the

entire island, slavery was abolished and folk music spread throughout the island. Folk

Music Merengue is a musical and dance style originating in the Dominican Republic in

the late 19th century. In its origins, merengue was performed with guitars. Later the

guitars were replaced by the accordion that together with the Güira and the tambora,
form the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set synthesizes

the three cultures that shaped the idiosyncrasy of Dominican culture. The European

influence comes to be represented by the accordion, the African by the tambora (drum

with two patches), and the Taíno or aboriginal by the güira. Like other peoples of the

Caribbean region and in general Latin America, the Dominican Republic has a culture

based on syncretism
