It has come long way from


being a family business to a mid-sized organisation. Traditionally they always believed
in appraising employees through checklist method. Recently, many employees have
come out being very vocal about their displeasure on the traditional way of appraisal
and feel it is an unjust way of assessing them. You have been hired as a consultant to
propose a new appraisal system. Also, conclude by justifying your selection for the
choice of appraisal method.

ANSWER NO. 1 :

Introduction​: The organization follows the typical method of appraising employees that is
checklist method. There are a number of disadvantages of following this method that is why
employees show their displeasure of applying this method.

Some of the disadvantages are:

(a) This method is based on ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ question/answers. There is no explanation behind
yes or no.

(b) It takes a lot of time to prepare checklists and questions to be put in it.

(c) Reliability is very much less. It is easy to overlook what is not there and what can be
included.

As a consultant I would like to propose Employee Self-appraisal method. It is a method in


which an employee is asked by the organization to self-evaluate his or her performance on the
job during a year. On the basis of self-evaluation of employee, then the meeting of review of
annual performance happened. In which, both the manager or leader and the employee takes
participate. Manager seeks the justification of all the statements made by the employee in the
appraisal form. Final evaluation negotiates on the basis of manager’s perception and
employee’s expectation and their mutual agreement.

The self-evaluation process assists in understanding the employees’ expectations; their past
job performance; how they carried it out; what they perceive about their working and job
performance, to identify their own weakness and strength in comparison to the others. What
kind of training they needed and what grades should be given to them. It assists management
in knowing and gathers the nerves of people and improvisation of organization’s climate and
atmosphere.

Here are some of the benefits of adopting Employee Self-appraisal in performance


management system and review:

1. Reliability:​ It rarely happen that self-evaluation or self-appraisal results are


considered without negotiation or discussion of employees with its team leader.
On the ethical note, it should not be done that way. So, if the organization follows
the self-appraisal then the chances of true and right appraisal is high.
2. Lesser degree of dissonance among employees and leaders:​ It is widely seen that
in most of the organization, there is existence of some dissonance with the
employees and their managers and most of the conversations run around appraisal,
monetary, benefits aspects. By having a discussion and negotiation, chances of
having dissonance can be reduced.

3. Purpose​: The major reason why most of the organization adapts self-appraisal as
method of appraisal is to uplift the communication regarding the job performances
between the manager and its team. Elements of discussion are what quality of
work is done in what amount of time; future business goals with divided into
working of quarter goals; skills and learning attained from past working and next
step for the individual’s career.

4. Faith in the system:​ In the mean world, everything seems to be unfair especially
when it comes to someone’s growth, career, and benefits. Everyone thinks he or
she is more deserving than the other. This method of appraisal helps in changing
the perception of the employee in terms of the review and appraisal system. It
helps in letting know the employee about the demands and expectations of the
origination and where his or her performance stands. It helps in reducing the
unnecessary stress, tensions which are the results of negative atmosphere.

Conclusion​: Self-appraisal method provides a structural approach for self-evaluation which


allows all the employees to rate themselves on different aspects. In addition to that, it also
assists in exclusive introspection feedback that makes easy for all the employees to put all the
relevant information about the factors and elements which help them in achieving their future
goals.

2. Alaya infrastructure is a small sized organization having 150 employees. The


organization never had formal induction training. You are their first ever HR Manager
and you strongly feel the need to have induction training. You are asked to present the
concept and need for induction training to senior management. Conclude by
emphasizing on the importance/advantages of induction training.

Introduction​: Training is referred to a process by which an organization wants to impart or


inject information or instructions regarding a specific subject, topic, course, about the
organization and its subsidiaries, organization’s work etc. into employees within or outside of
the organization to enhance and attain the required level of the skills, knowledge and
performances of the employees.

Induction training is mandatory for every employee. Despite the fact that employees
possesses high level of qualification and eligibility, but still every organization wants to give
training to their employees because:

1. Dynamic environment & differentials –​ Use of technology, computers, various


types of machines etc. require technical knowledge. Moreover, the trend of use of
existing technology can become obsolete at any point of time. So, induction
training is necessary for employees to let them know how the organization’s
environment, technology is different from their previous organization. How they
have to deal with existing technology and how to adapt if there is any changes
occur.

2. Complexity in the organizational structure – ​Division of the organization on the


basis of functions, product and service based division, team, network etc. the
organizational structure has become more complex. This leads to increase in
facing the problems of coordination among the employees. So, with the help of
induction training newly recruited employees and existing employees can be
trained how to coordinate in such a situation.

3. Relations in the organization –​ Healthy human relations are the basic need of the
organization and every management wants to ensure that there are going smooth
relations in the organization. Induction training facilitates in knowing the
hierarchy in advance and eliminates confusion of point of contact and human
relation problems.

4. To make employees eligible and specific to the job specification –​ Sometimes, it


happens that employees may are eligible and qualified enough for the job but are
not exactly suited to the job, irrespective of his/her past experiences, skills and
knowledge etc. A gap of organization’s requirements and employees’ current
present status is always there. Induction training is helpful in eliminating this gap
by letting the people how they can climb the ladder. What is the process of it?
How it can be attained?

5. Organization policies – ​There are various adopted by the organization regarding


the women's safety, compensation plans, career growth. It is not possible to go to
every employee’s desk and tell them. So induction training help in spreading of
policies at once to all.

successful planning and implementation. Clear understanding of the skills and
information and the way that is to be imparted to employees make the training
successful.

7. Training staff –​ The staff member who is responsible for the impartment of
training plays a significant role in making the training more effective. Education
and experience of trainers matter a lot in developing training session and how they
cope up with their audience.

8. Audience – ​Audience is the major factor that influences the effectiveness of


training session. On the basis of type of audience, their eligibility and knowledge,
the trainer develops their program and training session. If audience have any little
background knowledge about the subject, then it would be easy for the trainer to
run the session.
