MODULE 1: SEQUENCES
Lesson 1e: Arithmetic Sequences
LEARNING TARGETS:
1. Solve real-life problems involving arithmetic sequence and arithmetic series.
CONCEPT:
1. Word problems involving arithmetic sequence and arithmetic series can be solved using the corresponding
formula.
Illustrative Example:
Cherrie made deposits from her school allowances as follows: ₱ 10 on the first week, ₱ 13 on the
second week, ₱ 16 on the third week, and so on, until she made 52 deposits. What was the amount of her last
deposit? How much was her total savings after 52 deposits?
Let’s Explore….
ACTIVITY 1: BEYOND THE BASICS
Do each of the following.
A. It is alarming that many people now are being infected by HIV. As the president of the student body in your school,
you invited people to give a five-day series of talks on HIV and its prevention every first Friday of the month from 12
noon to 1pm in the auditorium. On the first day, 20 students came. Finding the talk interesting, these 20 students
shared the talk to other students and 10 more students came on the second day, another 10 more students came on
the third day, and so on.
1. Assuming that the number of participants continues to increase in the same manner, make a table
representing the number of participants from day 1 of the talk until day 5.
2. Represent the data in the table using a formula. Use the formula to justify your data in the table.
3. You feel that there is still a need to extend the series of talks, so you decide to continue it for three more
days. If the pattern continues where there are 10 additional students for each talk, how many
students in all
attended the talk on HIV?
B. After a knee surgery, your trainer tells you to return to your jogging program slowly. He suggests jogging for
12 minutes each day for the first week. Each week, thereafter, he suggests that you increase that time by 6 minutes
per day. On what week will it be before you are up to jogging 60minutes per day?
APPLICATION:
1. A house help receives a salary of ₱ 36,000 a year with a contract of ₱ 250 annual increase for 7 years. What is his
total income for 7 years?
2. A pile of blocks has 60 blocks in the bottom row, 54 blocks in the second row, 48 blocks in the third row, and so on
until there is only 6 blocks on the top row. How many blocks are in the 8 th row? 10th row?
3. In a potato race, 10 potatoes are placed in a straight line 5 meters apart, the first potato being placed 6 meters from
the starting point. How many meters does a contestant travel in collecting the potatoes one at a time and placing
them in a basket located at the starting point?
