What are hydrocarbons? 2 Marks
Hydrocarbons – Compounds made up of carbon and
hydrogen only
Not all organic compounds are hydrocarbons. Most
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds.

CARBON
Organic Chemisty = Carbon Compounds
To be an organic compound, the compound must have
carbon however not all carbon compounds are organic.

CRUDE OIL
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, that is, all crude oil
compounds have carbon and hydrogen only.

Factors upon which crude oils are separated and divided.

1. Boiling Point – The larger the hydrocarbon, the greater
the boiling point is.
2. Volatility- The faster it evaporates the more volatile it is.
3. Viscosity – Density of a certain part.
4. Colour Darkness
5. Combustibility – How easily a compound can burn.
Why do we need to break up large hydrocarbons into smaller
compounds? 3 Marks

Fractional Distilation occurs in Fractionating Column.

Fractional Distilation is used to separate crude oil into its
fractions.
Fractions Include – Refinary Gases, Gasoline, Kerosene, Diesel
Oil, Fuel oil and Bitumen.
