MONOCHROMATOR ALIGNMENT

1) Remove the Beam Combiner, Lens assembly and the Detector assembly. Move the Slit wheel down below
the hole in the Slit bracket. Unplug the Chopper Motor connector at the Chopper.

2) Install the Laser fixture in the Spray Chamber of the Burner Assembly. Mount the Laser fixture so that the
laser points toward Torroid 2.

3) Plug the Laser power supply into an AC outlet and turn the power ON.

4) Put Target 1 in front of Torroid 2 and put Target 2 in front of the Chopper Assembly.

5) Adjust the Laser height adjustment and the Burner assembly adjustments until the laser goes through the
hole in Target 1 and is centered on Target 2.

6) Put Target 1 in the target hole after the area for mounting the Slit assembly and Target 4 between Torroid 3
and the Slit assembly area. Put the round Collimator target on the Collimator. Put Target 2 in the hole in
front of the Collimator assembly.

7) Adjust the alignment screws on Torroid 3 until the laser goes through the hole in Target 4, and is centered
on the inner circle of Target 1 and Target 2. Remove Target 1 and verify that the laser is centered on Target
2. Put Target 1 back. Torroid 3 assembly may need to be moved in or out, in order to achieve this. To move
the assembly in or out, loosen the 2 mounting screws. You can also adjust the laser and or the tilts on Toroid
2 if it helps. The important thing is to get the laser to go in a straight line through targets 1, 2, & 4. Make
sure the mounting screws are tight before proceeding to the next step. If any of the laser hits the Slit
assembly, then loosen the Slit mounting screw and move the assembly horizontally to allow the laser to go
through the Slit assembly.

8) Verify that the Motor and Looker connectors are connected to the E-Box Interface board. Also verify that
the E-Box is properly mating with E-Box Interface board.

9) Plug the Touch Screen cable and the Keyboard cable into the E-Box. Plug the AC line cord into the E-Box.
Plug the AC line cord into an AC outlet. Move the Slit wheel so that the flag is above the Looker. Turn the
Instrument ON.

10) After the instrument initializes, select OK for all Windows. In the Application software, select Tools and
then select Service. Select the Password box and a Keyboard should appear. Using the Touch Screen
Keyboard, type “PHOENIX” (capital letters must be used when typing the password using the external
Keyboard) and select OK twice. Then select Service Tools.

11) Select the Motor page from the top menu. Select the Slit. Enter an Absolute Slit value of 260 (After
entering an Absolute or Relative value, select the respective “Go To” button). This should roughly
center the laser vertically on Slit 4.

12) Move the Slit assembly horizontally to center the laser on Slit 4. Then tighten the Slit mounting screw. At
this point the laser should be centered horizontally on Slit 4 and going through the hole in Target 1 and
centered on Target 2. Remove Target 1. Move the Slit vertically by entering a Relative value of plus 1 or
minus 1 and then select Go Relative, in order to center the laser vertically on Target 2. Select the Start
Read button and record the position for Slit 4. Select the Stop Read button.

13) Enter an Absolute Slit value of 20. This should roughly center the laser vertically on Slit 0. Move the Slit
vertically by entering a Relative value of plus 1 or minus 1 in order to center the laser vertically on Target 2.
At this point the laser may be off horizontally, do not move the Slit assembly or adjust any optics to
correct this. Select the Start Read button and record the position for Slit 0. Select the Stop Read button.

14) Enter the Absolute Slit value recorded for Slit 4. Adjust the slit in steps plus 1 or minus 1 motor step to
center the light vertically on target 2, and record this position on the data sheet for slit 4. Install the Lens
assembly and leave the mounting screw loose. Adjust the Lens assembly horizontally and vertically in order
center the laser on Target 2. To adjust the Lens assembly vertically, loosen the 2 screws on the Lens plate
and move the plate. Tighten the plate screws and the mounting screws before proceeding to the next step.
Go back to slit 0 and re-check the vertical position on Target 2, then return to slit 4.

15) Remove Target 2. The laser should be relatively centered on the Collimator Target. If the center of the spot
is outside of the innermost circle, then the collimator assembly should be replaced. Remove the Collimator
Target.

16) Put Target 1 in the hole in front of the Grating assembly. Adjust the alignment screws on the Collimator to
center the laser on Target 1.

17) Put Target 1 in the hole between the Prism and the Field Stop. Select the Grating on the Touch Screen and
enter an absolute value of 26000. Enter a relative value (a positive number move the laser down and a
negative number will move the laser up), in order to center the laser vertically on Target 1 (if there are
multiple laser spots, use the one which is brightest and/or closest to the middle). The laser should be
relatively centered on Target 1. Select Start Read and record the Grating position. Select Stop Read.

18) Then remove Target 1. Put the round Camerasphere Target on the Camerasphere. Put Target 2 in the hole in
front of the Camerasphere.

19) Select the Prism on the Touch Screen and enter an absolute value of 39000. This should put the laser on
Target 2. Enter a relative value (a positive number move the laser toward the front of the instrument and a
negative number will move the laser toward the back of the instrument), in order to center the laser
horizontally on Target 2.

20) If the laser is vertically centered on Target 2 (i.e. the center of the laser spot is within the center of the inner
circle on target 2), then continue with the next step. If the laser is not vertically centered on Target 2, then
carefully bend the Prism mirror in order to center the laser vertically on Target 2. Select Reset. Repeat Steps
19 and 20. If the center of the laser is within the inner circle but not exactly on the center line, adjust the
grating motor steps to center it and record the new position.

21) Select Start Read and record the Prism position. Select Stop Read. Remove Target 2. The laser should be
relatively centered on the Camerasphere Target. If the center of the spot is outside of the innermost circle,
then the Camerasphere assembly should be replaced. Remove the Camerasphere Target.

22) Put the round Ellipsoid Target on the Ellipsoid. Adjust the alignment screws on the Camerasphere to center
the laser on the Ellipsoid Target. Remove the Ellipsoid Target.
23) Put Target 1 in the hole in front of the Field Stop. The laser should be relatively centered on the Target 1.
Put Target 1 in the hole after the Field Stop. The laser should be relatively centered on the Target 1. Remove
Target 1. If the light is not relatively centered on the targets, then the ellipsoid assembly should be replaced.
Verify that the laser is relatively centered in the Field Stop hole. If the light is centered on the ellipsoid and
targets but not centered on the field stop hole, then the field stop should be replaced (or re-worked to put the
hole in the right position).

24) Install the Detector Target using the Big Finger. Adjust the alignment screws on the Ellipsoid to center the
laser on the Detector Target. Then remove the Detector Target.

25) Install the Detector Assembly using the Big Finger. Do not connect the Detector ribbon cable to the E-
Box. Loosen the screws on the Detector board and move the board to center the laser on the Detector Pixels.
Tighten the screws on the Detector board before proceeding to the next step.

26) Install Target 3 in the path of the laser, between the Slit and the Collimator. Verify that the laser is centered
on the cross-hair of Target 3.

27) Turn Off the Laser power supply and remove the Laser fixture.

28) This concludes the Monochromator alignment.

BACKLIGHTING SAMPLE AND REFERENCE BEAMS

1) Install the Backlight fixture and turn ON the power supply. The light from the Backlight fixture should be
relatively centered on Target 3, with the majority of the light going through the Target and flooding the Slit.
Then remove Target 3.

2) Remove the Lens assembly. Install Target 4 in the hole between Torroid 3 and the Slit assembly. Put Target
1 in the hole between the Chopper assembly and Torroid 3. Put Target 2 in the hole in front of Torroid 2.

3) Verify that the Chopper Blade is not in the path of the light going to Torroid 2.

4) Go to Slit 4, by selecting the Slit on the Touch Screen and “Move Absolute” to the recorded value for slit 4.

5) Adjust the alignment screws on Torroid 3 until the light is centered on and goes through the hole in Target 1
and is centered on Target 2. Torroid 3 assembly may need to be moved in or out, in order to achieve this. To
move the assembly in or out, loosen the 2 mounting screws. Make sure the mounting screws are tight before
proceeding to the next step.

6) Remove Target 1. Go to Slit 0, by entering the Absolute recorded for Slit 0.

7) Adjust the vertical alignment screw only, on Torroid 3, to center the light vertically on Target 2. If the light
is not centered horizontally, this is OK, do not make any further adjustments to center the light
horizontally.

8) Go to Slit 1, by entering a relative value of 60. Then move the Slit in 1 step increments to center the light
vertically on Target 2. Make sure there isn’t a dark spot on the lamp which can make it difficult to see the
edges of the slit image on target 2. Wiggle the backlighting fixture if necessary so you can see where the
edges of the slit image are. Select Start Read and record this value for Slit 1. Select Stop Read.

9) Repeat step 8 in order to set the Slit height for Slits 2 through 10. Note that you may need to modify the
value for slit 4.

10) Go to Slit 0, by entering the Absolute value recorded for Slit 0. Then recheck Slits 1 through 10, by entering
the Absolute values recorded for each Slit.

11) Go to Slit 4, by entering the Absolute value recorded for Slit 4.

12) Install the Lens assembly and leave the mounting screw loose. Adjust the Lens assembly horizontally and
vertically in order center the light on Target 4. To adjust the Lens assembly vertically, loosen the 2 screws
on the Lens plate and move the plate. Tighten the plate screws and the mounting screws before proceeding
to the next step. Verify that the light is centered on Target 2. Look at the shape of the vertical crosshair on
target 2. It should be symmetric top-to-bottom. If it curves out much more (or much less) on the top than
on the bottom, then there may be a problem with the angle of Toroid 3, and the assembly should be
replaced.

13) Remove Target 2. Install the fixture for Target 5.

14) Put the Torroid 1 target on Torroid 1. Adjust the alignment screws on Torroid 2 in order to center the light
on the Torroid 1 target. Put Target 5 on the center of the fixture and look at the image. If it is not a “nice
rectangle”, then there may be a problem with Toroid 2 (and/or possibly Toroid 3). Slide Target 5 to the end
of fixture near Torroid 2. Check the location of the light on Target 5. Slide the Target to the other end of
fixture near Torriod 1. Check the location of the light on Target 5. The light on target 5 does not need to be
exactly on center, but it should be off center in the same direction and by the same distance at all 3
positions. If the light on Target 5 is shifted by the same distance at both ends of the fixture, then skip step
15.

15) If the light on Target 5 is shifted by different distances at both ends of the fixture, then loosen the mounting
screws on Torroid 2 and move the assembly in or out. Tighten the mounting screws and repeat step14.

16) Look at the beam at the right end of Target 5. If the vertical crosshair is not symmetric top-to-bottom, then
there may be a problem with the angle of Toroid 2. Remove Target 5. Adjust the alignment screws on
Torroid 2 in order to center the light on the Torroid 1 target. Remove the Torriod 1 target.

17) Install the adapter for Target 2 in the hole for the Beam Combiner. Put Target 2 on the adapter. Adjust the
alignment screws on Torroid 1 in order to center the light on Target 2. Remove Target 2 and the adapter.

18) Put Target 1 in the hole in front of the Chopper Assembly toward Torroid 4. Put the Torroid 4 target on
Torroid 4. Move the Chopper Blade in the path of the light.

19) Loosen the mounting screws of the Chopper Assembly and move the assembly in order to align the light
centered on Target 1, and (when you remove target 1) centered on the Torroid 4 target. Tighten the
mounting screws. Remove Target 1. If the light is slightly off on the Torroid 4 target, then adjust the
Chopper adjustment screws to center the light. Be careful to keep the bevel washers adjusted at the proper
compression when you adjust the chopper. If the washers get fully compressed, then you could damage the
sheet metal parts in the chopper assembly when you make clockwise adjustments. Similarly, if you make
counter-clockwise adjustments, you could decrease the compression on the bevel washers too much. As a
general rule, if you turn one of the chopper adjusting screws by one full turn, you should first turn the nut on
the corresponding bevel washer stack one half turn in the opposite direction. When you’re done adjusting,
you can tighten both nuts until the washers are fully compressed, then back off one half turn.

20) Put Target 1 back in the hole in front of the Chopper Assembly toward Torroid 4. Verify that the light is still
relatively centered on the Target 1. If the light is not relatively centered on Target 1 then repeat Steps 19 and
20.

21) Remove Target 1. Move the Chopper blade so that the opposite end of the blade is in the path of the light
and verify that light is centered on the Torroid 4 target.

22) Remove the Torroid 4 target. Put the Flat 1 target on Flat 1 mirror.

23) Adjust the alignment screws on Torroid 4 in order to center the light on the Flat 1 target. Remove the Flat 1
target.

24) Install the adapter for Target 2 in the hole for the Beam Combiner. Put Target 2 on the adapter. Adjust the
alignment screws on the Flat 1 mirror in order to center the light on Target 2.

25) Remove Target 2 and the adapter.

26) Install the Beam Combiner and leave the mounting screws loose. Install the Lamp Holder assembly. Install
the HCL Lamp target in Position 1, flush with the inner surface of the Lamp Holder.

27) Select Lamp, on the Touch Screen. Select Reset in order to reset the Turret. Enter an Absolute value of
70,000. Select Read. Verify that the Absolute value is 70,000. Select Stop Read.

28) Select the Reset. Enter an Absolute value 34,100.

29) Move the Chopper Blade out of the path of the light. The light should be relatively centered on the Turret
mirror.
30) Put the HCL Lamp Mirror target on the No. 1 HCL Flat mirror. Move the Turret mirror by entering Relative
values in order to center the light horizontally on the HCL Lamp Mirror target. The light may not be
centered vertically.

31) Select Read and then select Stop Read. Select Reset to reset the Turret. Then select Go To Absolute. Verify
that the light is centered horizontally on the HCL Lamp Mirror target. If the light is centered horizontally on
the HCL Lamp Mirror target, then select Read and record this value for Lamp 1. Select Stop Read and skip
the next Step.

32) If the light is not centered horizontally on the HCL Lamp Mirror target, then repeat Step 30 and Step 31.

33) Remove the HCL Lamp Mirror target. Adjust the adjustment screws on the No. 1 HCL Flat mirror, in order
to center the light on the HCL Lamp target.

34) Move the Chopper Blade in the path of the light. Move the Beam Combiner in order to center the light
vertically on the Lamp target. Tighten the mounting screws. Adjust the alignment screw on the Beam
Combiner mount in order to horizontally center the light on the Lamp target.

35) Move the Chopper Blade in and out of the path of the light and verify that the Sample and Reference beams
are centered on the same spot. The shape of the Sample and Reference beams may not be identical.

36) Move the Chopper Blade out of the path of the light.

37) Adjust the alignment screws on F-2 in order to center the light D2 Lamp.

38) Enter an Absolute value of 35,500.

39) Put the HCL Lamp Mirror target on the No. 2 HCL Flat mirror. Move the Turret mirror by entering Relative
values in order to center horizontally the light on the No. 2 HCL Flat Mirror target. The light may not be
centered vertically.

40) Select Read and then select Stop Read. Select Reset to reset the Turret. Then select Go To Absolute. Verify
that the light is centered horizontally on the No. 2 HCL Flat Mirror target. If the light is centered
horizontally on the No. 2 HCL Flat Mirror target, then select Read and record this value for Lamp 2. Select
Stop Read and skip the next Step.

41) If the light is not centered horizontally on the No. 2 HCL Flat mirror target, then repeat Step 39 and Step 40.
42) Remove the HCL Lamp Mirror target. Put the HCL Lamp target in Position 2. Adjust the adjustment screws
on the No. 2 HCL Flat mirror, in order to center the light on the HCL Lamp target.

43) Repeat Steps 38 thru 42 in order to align Lamp Positions 3 (start with the Turret an absolute value of
36,900) and 4 (start with the Turret an absolute value of 38,300).

44) Select Reset to reset the Turret. Enter the Absolute value recorded for recorded for Lamp 1. Put the HCL
Lamp target in Lamp Position 1. Verify that the light is centered on the HCL Lamp Target.

45) Select the Slit on the Touch Screen. Enter the Absolute value recorded for Slit 1. Move the Chopper Blade
in and out of the path of the light and verify that the Sample and Reference beams are centered on the HCL
Lamp target. If the Sample and Reference beams are located on the same spot on the HCL Lamp target go to
Step 47. If the Sample and Reference beams are not located on the same spot and seem to be moving in
opposite directions horizontally, then continue with the next Step.

46) On the Touch Screen enter a Relative value in 1 step increments, to align the height of Slit 1, in order move
the Sample and Reference beams on the same spot, on the HCL Lamp target. The Slit position should not
need to be moved by more than 2 steps from the recorded value. Record the new Slit value.

47) Repeat Steps 45 and if necessary Step 46 for Slits 2 through 10.

48) Close the Service Tools window. Select the Reg_Inst button and enter these new Slit and Lamp positions.
Select the Save button and close window. Select the Control and Escape keys simultaneously. Select Run
and type “\storage card\killer.exe”. Select Run and type “\Storage Card\register.exe” -w.

49) Turn Off the Backlight fixture. Remove all targets and target fixtures. Turn the instrument OFF.

50) This concludes the Backlight procedure.
