02(a). A Freon 12 refrigerator producing a cooling effect of 20 kJ/sec operates on a simple cycle with

there is no under cooling. Determine power required by the machine. If compressor operates at
300 rpm and has a clearance volume of 3% of stroke volume, determine piston displacement of
compressor. For compressor assume that expansion is following the law pv1.13 = C. Specific heat
of vapor at condenser pressure is 0.747 kJ/kg.K.

0.06 bar. The heating load is supplied by extracting steam from the turbine at 2 bar which is
condensed in the processor device to saturated liquid at 2 bar and then pumped back to the boiler.
Compute :
(i) The steam generation capacity of boiler in kg/hr, (ii) heat input to boiler in kW, (iii) fuel
burning rate of boiler in t/hour if a coal of calorific value 25 MJ/kg is burned and the boiler

07(b). A four cylinder four stroke SI engine has an output of 80 kW at 3000 rpm. A Morse test is
conducted and brake torque readings are 175 Nm, 170 Nm, 174 Nm and 172 Nm respectively.
The specific fuel consumption for normal running at this engine speed is 0.385 kg/kW hr. The
calorific value of fuel is 44,000 kJ/kg. Calculate the mechanical and brake thermal efficiencies
