10 FILIPINO ENGINEERS WHO ARE CONSIDERED TO BE TECHNOPRENEURS

1. MARX MELENCIO (Grayscale Business Consultancy and Marketing Services)

He is the founder and managing director of Grayscale Business Consultancy and Marketing
Services. Marx Melencio graduated as a Bachelor of
Science Mathematics at the University of the
Philippines (UP) and serves as an example to all,
especially to those who are with disabilities. He started
as a salesman at 14 years old. At 23, while out with his
wife, buying food at Cubao, Quezon City, he was
senselessly gunned down by a deranged stranger.
According to him, the first bullet pierced his chest and
the second hit his left temple, causing him 100%
blindness, permanently. After having been rejected
many times from job opportunities, mostly due to his
blindness, he decided to seek opportunities in the
Internet. Here, he realized the potential of search engine
optimization and soft sell content marketing. He
worked at Intelligraph, a trimedia service provider, as a
writer for a couple of months, where he planned to start
a business in the same industry but with a different
business model. He founded Grayscale and started only
with time, a couple of computers, the Internet, their home as a workplace, and four people, including
his wife. Grayscale started as a Web marketing company with it’s first project, a client’s carrier
product, being recognized as the world’s best-selling Windows optimizer (2007). Now, Grayscale is
certified Microsoft Partner and a global ICT consulting company in the Philippines.

2. GIAN SCOTTIE JAVELONA (OrangeApps)

Created fame or himself at the age

of 19 by launching the first mobile
application for schools in the Philippines
called OrangeApps, landing him a spot in
Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Asia’s list (2017).
OrangeApps provides access to a student’s
records and enrollment forms. Gian Scottie
Javelona studied computer engineering at
Polytechnic University of the Philippines
(PUP). Needing the money, Gian Scottie
Javelona had become business-minded by
high school and had started to do basic
programming. By college, having
experienced the hardships of being a student
at PUP, where “one computer is shared between 8 students”, he gained an idea to write a software that
could potentially make life easier for students like him. He had admittedly already been hacking
through his school’s database, not to edit his grades, but to make logging in faster. Through this
experience, his friend’s laptop, and mobile phone, he created an Android application where enrollment
is faster and can be done through phones. He developed it so that in this app, you could study, take
classes, answer quizzes, and enroll. After a meeting with their school’s president he decided to sell his
product to different schools where, despite his age, lack of financial assistance, and lack of experience,
gained investors through hard work and perseverance.

drove through Tagaytay. The idea was to see which type
of classified ads would have the biggest buyers and
sellers. They wanted the classified ads to have a site of its
own. Their website, Sulit.com.ph boomed and was soon
part of a network called OLX. They then decided that
Sulit.com.ph would become OLX’s Philippine base

growth. Becoming tired of his IT consultancy, he decided to
complete a master’s degree in Global E-business in France,
planning to pursue his interest in the web. He had gained
experience as an employee in a Paris-based startup company that
