Experiment#05
1: Objective:
To measure hand grip strength by using hand dynamometer & recommend exerting maximum
force.
2: Problem Statement:
Most of the jobs are designed to be performed by hands. So, improper grip while handling,
catching, pulling, pushing can cause serious hazards. It is better that you have strong and strong
grip when any of them do.
3: Apparatus:
4: Theory:
Hand grip strength can be quantified by measuring the amount of force applied on dynamometer.
The force can be in Kilograms and pounds.
4.1: Dynamometer:
It is a device that can measure force and power that how much you need the power to
hold the thing. Doctors used this to measure the strength in muscles of human body
which can be helpful for the diagnosing the illness.
4.2: Applications of Hand dynamometer:
It is frequently used by physical therapist and doctors to diagnose the disease
It is used in industries to check the strength of workers that he is able to perform or
not
It is used to check strength of wrist in sports like boxing.
4.3: Types:
There are three types of dynamometer
1
Absorption
Transmission
Hydraulic
4.4: Absorption dynamometer:
An absorption dynamometer is usually equipped with some means of measuring the
operating torque and speed. The power absorption unit (PAU) of a dynamometer absorbs
the power developed by the prime mover.
5: Procedure:
First take the hand dynamometer and set the dial gage to zero reading.
Adjust the level of dynamometer according to your level of comfort of gripping.
Let your right hand in free position and apply the force on dynamometer.
Dynamometer will show reading, note the reading.
Again put the dial gage of dynamometer to zero.
Then give your hand some support and again grip and apply the force on it.
Repeat the experiment.
