Typhoon HIL: Virtual HIL Device Quick Start Guide
Virtual HIL Device is a software module within Typhoon HIL’s software toolchain which emulates a Typhoon HIL hardware
device in non-real time on a PC. To try out Virtual HIL Device’s functionality, just go through the following simple steps,
which include: 1) Installing Typhoon HIL Control Center software, 2) Opening Schematic Editor, 3) Opening a schematic
file, 4) Verifying the schematic settings, 5) Compiling and opening the model, 6) Selecting the Virtual HIL Device, 7)
Loading a SCADA Panel File, 8) Running the simulation and interacting through a SCADA panel, 9) Experimenting with
more examples, and 10) Using the Documentation Hub.
Detailed explanations of each step, together with the relevant screenshots, are given in the text below, while the list of
suitable examples which can run without an external control is given in Section 9.
* After the registration you should receive a verification e-mail. If you do not receive a verification e-mail after a couple of minutes, check your junk and spam folders. If you are still not able to find it, contact our
support at [email protected]

• Install Typhoon HIL Control Center
• Restart Typhoon HIL Control Center to apply the new license file
* If you are having trouble downloading the license file directly from Typhoon HIL software, you can download the license file from your client area on Typhoon HIL’s website and then import the license from Typhoon
HIL Schematic Editor.

2 Open Schematic Editor
After reopening Typhoon HIL Control Center, click the Schematic Editor icon.

4 Verify schematic settings
In the Model menu select the “Schematic settings” menu item. Please, verify that HIL402 is selected
in the “Hardware product” drop-down list of the “Hardware settings” tab in the “Schematic settings”
window.

7 Load the SCADA panel file
When the compiled model is loaded into HIL SCADA, the appropriate SCADA panel file for the
particular model will be automatically recognized and displayed below the label “Panels files found in
Model directory”. The SCADA Panel file can be found in the same folder where the model file is located.
Capture/Scope widget is a powerful tool in which you can observe simulated signals. Signal settings
and Display settings allow you to find and display a particular signal from the model and adjust its
visual properties. For further details see Typhoon HIL Software Manual.

By using other SCADA widgets, you can create many
other forms of interaction. Additionally, with SCADA
widgets you can also monitor the simulation signals in
many different ways using a wide selection of gauges and
monitoring widgets. You can drag and drop widgets from
the library, which is on left side of the window, and use
the widgets to monitor or control model execution, either
directly or by using a piece of Python code. For further
details, plase see Typhoon HIL Software Manual.
9 Examples
ou can find more examples in the model example folder. Certain example models do not require an
Y
external controller, which makes them especially suitable for simulating on the Virtual HIL Device.
Such example models are:
• examples\models\power electronics\indm_open_loop_control
• examples\models\power electronics\indm_closed_loop_control
• examples\models\power electronics\boost_closed_loop
• examples\models\power electronics\mppt_boost_charger
• examples\models\power electronics\grid_connected_converter_pq
• examples\models\power electronics\battery storage
• examples\models\microgrid\simple_microgrid_1
