Literature

Why Should We Review the Literature?
● Allow you to reflect on your own problem through
someone else’s lens.
● Find support for what you are doing.
● Be challenged by what other researchers have done.
● Determine what has already been done that related to
your topic.
● Discover research strategies and specific data collection
approaches .
● Facilitate interpretation of your study results.
What if you cannot find any published
research related to your area of
researchers?

● It is not worthy of investigation!!


● However, it doesn’t mean your topic is not important!
How Broad and Comprehensive should Literature Review Be?
● Avoid the temptation to include
everything you find in your literature
review.
● Review only those works that are
directly related to your specific
problem.
● When investigating a new or little
researched problem area, review any
study related in some meaningful way
to your problem.
Steps for Searching Computer Databases

1. Identifying Keywords

E.g. The Effect of Interactive Multimedia on the Achievement of Tenth-grade Biology Students

Key words: interactive multimedia; biology

2. Select the appropriate databases

For example, ERIC, Education Full Text, PsycINFO, Google Scholar

3. Initiate a search using your keywords selectively.

4. Reformulate your search using appropriate subject headings, combining terms as


appropriate.
Steps for Searching Computer Databases
5. Check the item record for links to additional subject headings or descriptors, etc.

6. Most databases provide a link that will create a citation in various formats, including APA.

7. Many databases allow you to create an account, so you can log in to save and manage
your searches and your relevant research articles.

Make an Outline by asking…. Analyze each reference in terms


of your outline…..
1. What is the problem of study?
2. Is the study relevant given your Utilize the 5 W’s & 1 H and one H
research intent? to you to determine the validity
3. Who was studied? of your sources.
4. Where was the source published?
5. When was the study conducted?
6. How was the study conducted?
Annotating Your Sources
Involves creating summaries by:

➢ Locating
➢ Reviewing
➢ Summarizing
➢ Classifying your references

* Annotations assess the quality, relevance and accuracy of a source;


articulate your response to a source & indicate why the source is important to
your resource. Often times It’s beneficial to start with the most recent studies.
Analyzing, Organizing & Reporting the Literature
Make and outline

Sort references by topic

Analyze Similarities & differences between references in a given subheading

Give a meaningful overview & conclude with a brief summary of lit review
