EVIDENCE: REPORTING ABOUT A SPORT EVENT

The 2020 Olympics in 2021

The Olympic Games are the largest multidisciplinary international sporting

event), with more than 10,000 athletes representing 204 countries, 300
individual events in 28 different sports, more than 10 million tickets sold, and
a worldwide television audience of billions.

Promoted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), since 1896 they

have taken place every four years in various cities of the world, with the only
exceptions, so far, being the editions of 1916, 1940 and 1944, due to the
outbreak of the two world wars . The IOC has decided to delay the holding of
the competition scheduled for this year until 2021.

Although the celebration of Tokyo 2020 in 2021 is better than if they had
been canceled, these Olympic Games will hardly be profitable for Japan: with
35 billion dollars of investment spending, the IOC controls the television
rights and leaves the local organization the income from ticket sales (about $
1 billion).

In fact, as they are currently managed, organizing some games is not

economically viable for most cities, mainly and among other direct costs, due
to the significant infrastructure investments they require. Yes they will be for
the IOC, which will bill an amount similar to what was already planned for
2020.
