Computer – Aided Design (CAD),
also known as Computer-Aided Drafting
and Design (CADD), is the use of
computer systems to assist in the
creation, modification, and analysis of a
design. It describes the process of
creating technical drawings with the use
of a computer software.
CAD software offers designers
more options when it comes to creating
standard industry templates. It lets
architects, engineers, draftsman,
students operate at a higher level of
efficiency than in manual drafting. Instead
of using protractors, triangular scale and
T-squares, the designers have all the
tools they need from the comfort of
computer.
CAD software opens up designs to
2D and 3D views. With various
technological innovations, architects,
engineers, draftsman, students can now
engage in 3D printing in the construction
industry that led to improved productivity
and greater accuracy working drawings.
• Accuracy of drawings
• Enhanced productivity
• Ease of use
• Flexibility for additional information

AutoCAD

AutoCAD software from Autodesk was

one of the first CAD software to be
released on the market in 1982, making it
a very established CAD software across
industries. It is software that enables
architects, engineers, draftsman, as well
as construction professionals to draft both
2D and 3D designs.
AutoCAD is a computer-aided software
drafting program. It is used for a number
of applications like creating blueprints for
buildings, bridges and computer chips to
name a few. AutoCAD is 2D and 3D
computer aided drafting software
application. It is commercial software.
Since 1982 it was a desktop application.
Since 2010, it is available as a mobile,
web and cloud-based app and known as
AutoCAD 360.
AutoCAD
• AutoCAD as an architectural planning
tool: It comes with a user-interface with
built-in design lay-outs. The lay-outs
contain numerous templates specially
designed for architectural planning and
building construction. The latest versions
of AutoCAD come with analytical tools.
• AutoCAD as an engineering drafting
tool: AutoCAD can use to draw accurate
2D drawings for any engineering domain
and also use AutoCAD to render 3D
models to help in visualization of the end
product. It is useful for Civil, Mechanical
and Electrical systems.
• AutoCAD as a graphic design tool:
AutoCAD has innate features that enable
users to plan and map out spaces and
take advantage of the space available. It
can be used simultaneously with 3D max
and various other application software
including animation tools.
• AutoCAD in 3d printing: For a 3D print
of an object, one has to choose the
object, get a virtual 3D representation
and then feed it to the 3D printer. A 3D
print has its own advantages for designer
and this is where AutoCAD helps them. It
ensures file compatibility so that designs
can be exported to various preferred
formats.
• AutoCAD in the fashion industry: Every
pattern and design of jewelry does not
come by chance; it is the result of careful
planning and designing. AutoCAD has
the tools necessary for planning intricate
designs for manufacture of jewelry, toys
and other delicate objects.
• AutoCAD as industrial design tool:
AutoCAD helps to reduce manufacturing
costs as it saves time and efforts
required for manual designing.
• Storage and accessibility: AutoCAD
files can be saved on a computer or
archived in any storage media.
• 3D view: Although it is possible to
sketch 3D drawings manually, they are
not as effective and realistic as computer
aided drawings. AutoCAD help model 3D
objects with colors, materials and/or
textures applied to various surfaces
making them vivid and easier for the user
to visualize the end product.
• Revisions and modifications: Any
changes in manually drafted paper
drawings would require the draftsman to
draw the drawing again. CAD has inbuilt
tools that allow any number of revisions
and changes easily and quickly. You can
edit or delete details easily using simple
user- friendly commands.
• Speed: Creating a drawing in AutoCAD
is much faster than drawing manually.
You can also save time and effort by
creating re-usable block library.
• Accuracy: AutoCAD enables you to
draw with fractional dimensions and also
define precision to any number of
decimal places, which is not possible to
achieve in hand–drafted manual drawing,
hence offering accuracy in all
dimensions.

• Using the Mouse
The computer mouse has an
important role in AutoCAD. There are
three essential parts of a mouse, namely,
the left button, right button, and a scroll
wheel.
The image of a mouse displaying its
three basic parts is shown in the given
image:
• Using the Mouse
• Using the Mouse
SCROLL BUTTON
The scroll button in AutoCAD performs
two functions, which are given below:
1. ZOOM
When we scroll up the button, it
‘zoom out’ the screen. When we scroll
down the button it ‘zoom in’ the screen.
• Using the Mouse

We can also perform

this by using other
commands.
Right-click on the drawing
screen of the AutoCAD. A
box will appear as the
given image:
• Using the Mouse
2. PAN
To implement PAN using the
mouse, we need to press and hold the
scroll wheel and then drag. Some mouse
comes with a center button allowing
Panning without pressing the scroll
wheel. The example of such type of
mouse is CadMouse.
• Using the Mouse
LEFT BUTTON
The left button of a mouse in
AutoCAD plays the most important role
from selecting the object to the
completion of a drawing.
In every step of creating either 2D
or 3D drawings or models, the role of the
left button will be the prior option.
• Using the Mouse
RIGHT BUTTON
The right button of the mouse in
AutoCAD is used for customization; to
increase drawing productivity. The right
button is also used as a shortcut menu.
