CPD Rationale and Goals

The rationale behind this CPD was to involve in finding out how Communication skill is
considered as one of the crucial skills to work in Multicultural setting. After going through
the crucial skills listed, I believed having good communication skills will make me stand out
in any work setting in EU.
The purpose behind this CPD is to understand what the challenges in multicultural setting
are, how communication tools will help us in achieving this and how should I portray myself
in a diverse and multicultural workplace in Ireland. In addition to my learnings about the
tools I will be completing a online course “how to speak to anyone and be fearless” from
Udemy website. I felt that this “I am Agile” competency gave more insights about my
choices and helped me in deciding the area I should improve. My previous thoughts about the
role of Managers in hotel industry and the course I will be doing might help me to peruse the
same role I am looking for and preparing this CPD will help me to explore my grounds in
which I haven’t set feet in.

Reconstruct the Knowledge:

Throughout the process of completing this CPD I have delved into the challenges in
multicultural setting and what tools and strategies will help me stand out in any workplace in
Ireland.
Multicultural organisations are hubs of various cultures hailing from across the world.
Multicultural organizations (MCOs hereafter) are omnipresent in the current economic
system; and we are persistently surrounded by diverse cultures; therefore, workforce diversity
is becoming the common feature of the MCOs. The size and number of the organizations
operating across the globe is also growing very fast. Consequently, the diversity is more in
the consumer base, client groups, and partners [ CITATION Hus18 \l 1033 ]. Different parts of the
world have different instances of culture variants. Knowing these differences can simplify the
functions of both multinational employers and employees. Knowing the cultural diversity
helps in team building, trust formation, conflict resolution, effective collaboration, and more
importantly assess the performance of the team members. Different countries have different
formalities and etiquettes followed among them like Asian western culture have people who
treats strangers as friends and friends as strangers, in Africa hugging is considered as very
informal whereas in Asia it is not the same. Furthermore, some places also has culture where
they believe women cant match a man and they cant work shoulder to shoulder match with a
man. Different cultures have different ways of greeting like a handshake, in others a bow, in
others an embrace, in others s look into the eyes of conversational partners [CITATION Sud \l
1033 ].MCOs which fail to apprehend the cross cultural communication barriers face several
problems in many aspects of international business communication as it encompasses free
trade policies, localization and standardization strategy decisions, advertising, brand
effectiveness, business relationships, international business management, international
marketing, international negotiation, and consumer behaviour, staffing, industrial relations,
interpersonal relationships, negotiation, and teambuilding[ CITATION Ram15 \l 1033 ] .
Communication challenges are bound to come in the MCOs. The significant communication
challenges are language barrier, stereotyping, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, cultural
shock, attitude toward conflict resolution, task completion, decision making, privacy, trust
building, and non-verbal language. To overcome these communication challenges
communication tools are used and some of the best communication tools for 2019 are:
1. Monday.com – Award-winning, visually intuitive tool for planning, tracking, and
collaborating on work.
2. slack– Popular collaboration software for organizing communications, searching
comms history, and integrating other work tools.
3. Gmelius- Communication tool that turns your Gmail inbox into a help desk and
project management solution with automated processes.
4. Ryver- A robust communication tool to centralize messages, tasks, and voice and
video comms—with workflow automation features to streamline the process.
5. Flock – Robust collaboration app to sync your team’s messages, calls, files, tasks, and
external work tools.

Reconstruct the Self.

Throughout this CPD I understood different communication challenges and different tools
used in the current pattern and I could manage to explore them and understood where and
when i must use those tools while working in a multicultural setting. I am astonished with
these tools and hope these learnings will help me to succeed and give more power to me to
have a great communication around while working in a diverse and multicultural workplace.
We spend 75% of our time actively communicating--speaking and listening--compared to the
25% of time we spend passively communicating through writing and reading. Both active and
passive communication methods are important for managers to master because they hang in
careful balance. What we write may affect what we say; what we read may affect how we
listen. Considering these facts in addition to my learnings about the challenges and tools I
have also completed the online course called “how to speak to anyone and be fearless” from
Udemy website. The course was split into 5 sections which are: building blocks, break fear
and control the room, what really matters, beyond the basics, killer tips and moves of the
masters. I started it by acquiring the basics the fundamentals and he mentioned that “without
courage we are not going to go anywhere in this competitional world and It's about what you
practice and not what you know, it's what you put into action and not what is
stored”[CITATION Men19 \l 1033 ]. I managed to experiment all the learnings from the course, started
with talking to a stranger and accordingly I also presented on a topic “business” to one of my
colleague and took feedbacks from him on all the points I should improve. I am working as a part
time worker in a restaurant called amber tree in Maynooth ,I will be experimenting all the learnings
over there by talking to different customers and prepare myself before completing my masters so that
I will be ready to face all the challenges when I start working a company. While analysing throughout
the CPD I understood about companies in Ireland, I have started to prepare myself to adjust to their
work environment. ”You can’t over-communicate... If it’s bad, say it’s bad. If it’s going to be
tough – say so and ask for help”[ CITATION Oli19 \l 1033 ] with this I conclude that I will ask
for help if I don’t understand and train myself to set my feet into the new workplace here in
Ireland.
