Why People Especially the Government are against Country’s Indigenous people? Why it
seems they don’t give importance and and appreciation on them? These are some of the
questions formed in my mind. Why it seems the indigenous people don’t have voice to defend
themselves? It seems that government didn’t support the indigenous people whose role is to try
to preserve their identity, culture and the environment.
Forest management is one of their priorities, as they have social relationship with the
land, they develop, preserved, and maintain its natural identity of nature. There are
approximately 15 million indigenous people around the Philippines and about one hundred to
one hundred twenty thousand indigenous groups that are still exists according to Atty. Jennifer
Tauli- Corpuz. These indigenous people define us a nation as we all known for being a
multicultural country.
The people especially the government labelled them as anti development well in fact they
want to be a part of the development, they have to be able to be a voice to know what type of
development are appropriate for not just for them but also for the environment that they are
caring off. Atty. Jennifer Tauli- Corpuz gives an example in her hometown where in there is a
development project proposal of putting a windmills to creat electriciy not only for them but also
for their neighbouring areas. The authorities did not consult or provide so much information on
them that is why the indigenous people did mot agree until they ask them if they supported this
type of cause the will benefit the environment and its people. Some projects that are coming to
the community without the consent of the people and these projects from the government and
private sectors destroys the culture, culture is an essential part of community, and if the
government and other private sector disrupts the culture, they are killing the community, and
these indigenous people values the sense of community as it shows their unity as one.
The government always use its power and authority to control people with their desires.
The Indigenous people wants sustainable development that will not affect their culture, tradition,
the the environment and also its peoplewhile the government wants modern solutions, what is
good, what will give them more earnings, and how many people will benefit from it.
The bottom line here is both the government and the indigenous people wants
development, in facts it is ok for them to put mining around their place but the government
always follows because they have power and authority, they think that their solutions are much
more right and beneficial than indigenous people’s perspective. Both Government and
Indigenous people wants development but Government prevails as they have more power and
authority than anyone else. I am not saying that it is not unfair because the government just want
what is right for the people, but because of power, many sectors are not able to voice out their
sentiments and opinions regarding these issue of Indigenous people. The Government focuses
more on benefiting more people and where they can earn more money and benefit from it, they
disregards the indigenous people an the environment. I am saddened after I have watched the 40
minute video because it shows how voiceless the indigenous people are, that is why we need to
meet halfway to understand each others side and to avoid the overuse of power and authority.
