Cha-cha-cha Closed Basic Movement

The Cha Cha Basic Movement consists of 10 steps, which are a combination of
alternating rock steps and chasses danced in closed or open facing position, to the
rhythm of 2,3,4&1. Each rock step is danced on counts 2,3, each chasse on counts
4&1.

The rock steps of a Cha Cha Basic Movement alternate forward and backward, the left
foot taking the forward rock, the right foot taking the back rock.
The chasses can be danced sideways (side-together-side), or as a "Compact Chasse"
in place by shifting weight from foot to foot with feet together (together-together-
together).

Chasses can also be danced forward and backward. For more information, see Cha
Cha Progressive Basic Movement. The basic movement can be taken with or without
turn. When turning, most of the turn is taken between the two steps of the rock step and
the first step of the chasse. Partners turn equally at the same time. Up to 3/4 turn can
be taken over the 10-step pattern.

L Position (Lady on Man's Left).
End of preceding step on '&', after fully
transferred weight, turn 1/8 to L. Feet turned
out.
When turning, L hand/arm is "connected" with
upper frame, don't use shoulder joint as turning
point for arm. Whole body as a unit.
"2": RF fwd, feet turned out, 50-50% weight
split (whenever followed by a check step, it's
always split weight.)
"&": check step to change direction.
(Or, a different option: quick check action all
happens on "2")
hips turn 1/8 extra than feet, frame (upper
body) turn as much as possible to L (isolated
from hip)
Arm should be on same plane as body. During
the turn, arm line slowly going up, ideally
ending with L hand behind head, arm 45
degrees up. Lady: break at wrist (think of
showing off your ring), circle one round, ending
downward. Hand at eye level.
2 3 Transfer "3&", on "&", frame starts turning to face
weight to LF partner.
Make sure RF doesn't do rondes. Use the
technique for back walk. See Rumba New York.

 Check step: switching from forward movement to back.

o Standard check: on "&", more difficult to do. Correct execution shows
better control.
o Syncopated check: immediately as stepping on "2".
 Last step 5: can turn extra to end in RSP (or LSP) and continue with 4-9 of Three
Cha Cha Chas fwd.
 New York can also be danced from Three Cha Cha Chas fwd (in either LSP or
RSP), in which case no turn on step 1 of New York.
 When followed by Hand to Hand, the turning is at the end of "4&1&", sharp turn

3. Spot Turn
A Spot Turn is loosely defined as two forward steps and a chasse danced solo by
man or lady, circling either to the left or right, to the count of 2, 3, 4&1. Turns to the left
are commenced with the right foot; Turns to the right are commenced with the left foot.

Spot Turns as a Basic element can be danced in a variety of ways: Man and lady
turning at the same time, man turning lady underarm, or one partner turning while the
other dances a Time Step, just to name a few. But as a figure, Spot Turns are generally
danced by both man and lady at the same time, and that is how they are shown here.

The Spot Turn in this context is danced completely solo by both man and lady, so
it will be necessary to release both connected hands. However, one hand connection
should remain until the turn has been led. It is recommended that you use the hand that
is closer to the direction of turn for this purpose.
Partners should have completed one full turn by count 4, so that they can face
each other throughout the chasse. Pay close attention to the hand connections when
watching the video clip. Also notice the dancers' visual focus, as it helps them to
maintain a sense of direction throughout the turn.
