The Global City / Basic Principles of Sustainable Development

Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Worldwide Networks and Central Command Functions
ii. Centrality of the Global City
iii. Development Policy

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that I

thought that Global City is just about producing a country since I myself
know that I do not have a deeper understanding of this concept and idea.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
the points and what the author wants to imply in the article. She points
out that this global city’s concept and idea focuses on the flow of data,
information, and capital. Cities play a significant and major role in the
intertwined data and money systems, and the wealth they accumulate is
closely linked to the specific companies that facilitate these flows,
including financial institutions, consulting companies, accounting
companies, law firms, and media organizations. Reading the article made
me realize that these flows are no longer closely linked to domestic
borders and regulatory systems, so we can say that the global city’s
dynamics are significantly and drastically different from those of the
nineteenth-century big towns.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that I

thought that when you hear the word “media,” the discussion would be so
much easier since the topic is not that complicated and it is a simple
subject matter. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I
now think/realize although a location is a “worldwide town” issues may
still and may occur. From these structural facts about global cities, there
are three main trends or key tendencies, First, a wealth concentration in
the hands of owners, associates, and experts connected in this scheme
with high-end companies. Second, the town and its region are becoming
increasingly disconnected. Lastly, the development of a big marginalized
population that finds it but very difficult to earn a living on the market
defined by these high-end operations. But in my view, if we were to think
of the larger image, despite these trends, it would be better to be a global
city.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that I

thought that being a global city can be compared to the isolation since
new communication techniques can also be anticipated to have an effect
on inequality between cities and inside cities. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that global cities are
not yet fully formed and developed. The ability to function of these global
cities’ global firms and companies depends on a network of activities and
smaller companies within the city’s spatial scope and environment. If we
were to look at if we were global cities that would concentrate both the
world’s leading sectors of capital, then every problem a city faces is a
strategic terrain for a whole series of conflicts it could face.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas
you want more explanations about?
i. If there is a strong evidence on how to transform one place into a
global city, how can we identify if that place is no longer a global city?
ii. Which nation can we recognize as the alpha among the world’s top
cities?
iii. Is it feasible to have various global cities in a nation?
