1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include thermal conductivity, thickness, and
jackets (both factory and field applied, if any).
B. Shop Drawings:
1. Detail application of protective shields, saddles, and inserts at hangers for each type of
insulation and hanger.
2. Detail insulation application at pipe expansion joints for each type of insulation.
3. Detail insulation application at elbows, fittings, flanges, valves, and specialties for each type
of insulation.
4. Detail removable insulation at piping specialties, equipment connections, and access
panels.
5. Detail application of field-applied jackets.
6. Detail application at linkages of control devices.
7. Detail field application for each equipment type.
C. Samples: For each type of insulation and jacket indicated. Identify each Sample, describing
product and intended use.
1. Sample Sizes:

G. Certification from the local authorities like the local municipality and local civil defense to be
provided along with the submittals to ensure that procurement and installation of this material is
upto the required standard for that geography.
A. Packaging: Insulation material containers shall be marked by manufacturer with appropriate ASTM
standard designation, type and grade, and maximum use temperature.
1.6 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate size and location of supports, hangers, and insulation shields specified in Division 23
Section "Hangers and Supports for HVAC Piping and Equipment."
B. Coordinate clearance requirements with piping Installer for piping insulation application duct
Installer for duct insulation application, and equipment Installer for equipment insulation
application. Before preparing piping and ductwork Shop Drawings, establish and maintain
clearance requirements for installation of insulation and field-applied jackets and finishes and for
space required for maintenance.
1.7 SCHEDULING
A. Schedule insulation application after pressure testing systems. Insulation application may begin
on segments that have satisfactory test results.
B. Complete installation and concealment of plastic materials as rapidly as possible in each area of
construction.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Equipment, materials and workmanship incorporated into the work shall be warranted for a period
of one year from the time of system acceptance.
B. Within this period, upon notice by the Owner, any defects in the work provided under this section
due to faulty materials, methods of installation or workmanship shall be promptly (within 48 hours
after receipt of notice) repaired or replaced by this contractor at no expense to the Owner.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. All systems are to have been tested and approved by the Consultant prior to installation of
insulation
B. All thermal insulation shall be non-corrosive to the metal, water repellent and fire retardant.
C. All insulating materials shall be proofed against rotting, mould, fungus growth and attack by
vermin.
D. Materials and their method of application shall not constitute a known risk to health during
application or use.
E. Thermal conductivity values shall be tested in accordance with BS 2972.
F. The uses of galvanized or zinc coated insulation steel jacketing and accessories on or near
austenitic stainless steel and austenitic nickel steel/alloy equipment and piping, is prohibited.
G. Dissimilar metals and materials subject to galvanic corrosion shall not be installed in contact with
one another.
H. Where the complete assembly is liable to mechanical damage in use, the final finish shall be
sufficiently strong to ensure that the insulation does not become exposed.
I. Materials in contact shall be compatible and shall not cause corrosion of degradation under normal
site conditions.
J. Insulation materials and finishes shall be inherently proof against rotting, mould and fungal growth
and attack by vermin, be non-hygroscopic and in all respect, be suitable for continuous use
throughout the operating temperatures and within the environment where installed.
K. Materials shall be free from objectionable odour at the temperature at which they are to be used.
L. The insulation shall be suitable for the specified conditions of use without the physical properties
falling outside the tolerances allowed in the appropriate British Standard for the material.
M. Protect insulated stainless steel surfaces from the risk of stress corrosion in accordance with the
recommendations of BS 5970.
C. In addition to complying with the relevant standards, all insulating material shall be free from
asbestos.
D. The insulating material shall be acceptable only if they are equal to or better than the grades or
classes of the fire resistance as follows:
1. BS 4735, Class Q, for burning rate nil, and not producing melted droplets
2. BS 476 Part 4, for non-combustible grade
3. BS 476 Part 5, Class P, for not easily ignitable
4. BS 476 Part 7, for fire propagation index
5. BS 476 Part 7, Class 1, for surface spread of flame
6. BS 476 Part 9, for production of emitted smoke shall not gibe more than 35% obstruction of
the light beam.
E. All insulation finishes and covering shall be classified as Class 1 surface spread when
tested in accordance with BS 476, Part 7. They shall not in any way attack the insulation or the
surface to which the insulation is being applied and shall be suitable for working temperatures.
All adhesive, mastics, coatings, sealers and primers shall be classified as Class 1 surface spread
when tested in accordance with BS 476, Part 7. They shall not in any way attack the insulation or
the surface to which the insulation is being applied and shall be suitable for the working
temperatures.
H. Polyolefin: Cross linked (Physically or Chemically), closed cell Polyolefin foam with factory applied,
9um reinforced aluminum foil and factory applied acrylic adhesive backing..
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list:
1.1. Density: 25 Kg / m3 (foam core only); Contractor shall verify the thickness of the
insulation based on the heat transfer requirements for different sizes.

K. Mineral-Fiber Board Insulation: Mineral or glass fibers bonded with a thermosetting resin. Comply
with ASTM C 612, Type IA or Type IB. For duct and plenum applications, provide insulation with
factory-applied FSP jacket. Factory-applied jacket requirements are specified in "Factory-Applied
Jackets" Article.
Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.:
L. High-Temperature, Mineral-Fiber Board Insulation: Mineral or glass fibers bonded with a
thermosetting resin. Comply with ASTM C 612, Type III, without factory-applied jacket.

M. Phenolic:
2.5 ADHESIVES
A. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates and for bonding
insulation to itself and to surfaces to be insulated, unless otherwise indicated.
2.6 MASTICS
A. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates; comply with MIL-C-
19565C, Type II.
B. Vapor-Barrier Mastic: Water based; suitable for indoor and outdoor use on below ambient services.
1. Products: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. Water-Vapor Permeance: ASTM E 96, Procedure B, perm (0.009 metric perm) at.09-
mm)dry film thickness.
3. Service Temperature Range: Minus 29 to plus 82 deg C.
4. Solids Content: ASTM D 1644, 59 percent by volume and 71 percent by weight.
5. Color: White.
C. Vapor-Barrier Mastic: As per approved Manufacturer’s list.]:
1. Water-Vapor Permeance: ASTM F 1249, 0.03 metric perm at 0.9-mm dry film thickness.
2. Service Temperature Range: Minus 18 to plus 82 deg C.
3. Solids Content: ASTM D 1644, 44 percent by volume and 62 percent by weight.

D. Vapor-Barrier Mastic: Solvent based; suitable for outdoor use on below ambient services.

2.8 SEALANTS
A. Joint Sealants:
1. Joint Sealants for Polyolefin, Flexible elastomeric, Phenolic, products: Subject to
compliance with requirements, provide as per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2. Materials shall be compatible with insulation materials, jackets, and substrates.
3. Permanently flexible, elastomeric sealant.
4. Service Temperature Range: Minus 73 deg C to plus 149 deg C.
5. Color: White or gray
6. For indoor applications, use sealants that have a VOC content of 250 g/L or less when
calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).
A. Woven Glass-Fiber Fabric: Comply with MIL-C-20079H, Type I, plain weave, and presized a
minimum of 271 g/sq. m.
1. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide as per approved Manufacturer’s list.
2.13 TAPES
A. ASJ Tape: White vapor-retarder tape matching factory-applied jacket with acrylic adhesive,
complying with ASTM C 1136.
1. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide as per approved
Manufacturer’s list.
2. Width: 75 mm.
3. Thickness: 0.29 mm.
4. Adhesion: 1.0 N/mm in width.
5. Elongation: 2 percent.
6. Tensile Strength: 7.2 N/mm in width.
7. ASJ Tape Disks and Squares: Precut disks or squares of ASJ tape.
B. FSK Tape: Foil-face, vapor-retarder tape matching factory-applied jacket with acrylic adhesive;
complying with ASTM C 1136.
1. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide as per approved
Manufacturer’s list:
2. Width: 75 mm.
3. Thickness: 0.16 mm.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates and conditions for compliance with requirements for installation and other
conditions affecting performance of insulation application.
1. Verify that systems and equipment to be insulated have been tested and are free of defects.
2. Verify that surfaces to be insulated are clean and dry.
3. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
A. The insulation thickness should be in accordance with the requirements of BS 5422 and
calculated according to BS EN 10241 .The contractor shall provide the calculated thickness of the
insulation based on the heat transfer requirements for different sizes.
B. If the thickness given in, or interpolated from, the tables in the British Standard or the specification
do not correspond with available thickness, the nearest higher available thickness shall be used.
C. In multi-layer applications, where material thickness is rounded up to suit available
commercial
thickness, the installer shall ensure by calculation (in accordance with the appropriate British
Standard)
that each interface temperature is below the maximum continuous operating temperature of
the materials involved.
3.3 PREPARATION
A. Surface Preparation: Clean, dry and prepare surfaces to receive insulation. Remove materials that
will adversely affect insulation application. Before insulating, apply a corrosion coating to insulated
surfaces as follows:
1. Stainless Steel: Coat 300 series stainless steel with an epoxy primer 0.127 mm thick and
an epoxy finish 0.127 mm thick if operating in a temperature range between 60 deg C and
149 deg C. Consult coating manufacturer for appropriate coating materials and application
methods for operating temperature range.
2. Carbon Steel: Coat carbon steel operating at a service temperature between 0 deg C and
149 deg C with an zinc rich primer. Consult coating manufacturer for appropriate coating
materials and application methods for operating temperature range.
B. Coordinate insulation installation with the trade installing heat tracing. Comply with requirements
for heat tracing that applies to insulation.
C. Mix insulating cements with clean potable water; if insulating cements are to be in contact with
stainless-steel surfaces, use demineralized water.
The Contractor is to allow his price for the removal and replacement of two sections of each type of
insulation. Defective sections shall be replaced at no cost to the Contract. If further defects
are revealed then the Consultant shall have the right, when in his opinion it is necessary, to issue
instructions for any part or the whole of the insulation to be removed and replaced. The
replacement with new insulation shall be to the satisfaction of the Consultant and the cutting out
and replacement shall be at no cost to the Contract.
B. Particular attention shall be paid to the finished appearances of all thermal insulation which must
present a neat and symmetrical appearance running true in the line with pipe layouts, etc. Any
rough, irregular and badly finished surfaces shall be stripped down and re-insulated to the
Consultant’s satisfaction.
C. Install insulation materials, forms, vapor barriers or retarders, jackets, and thicknesses required for
each item of equipment, duct system, and pipe system as specified.
D. Install accessories compatible with insulation materials and suitable for the service. Install
accessories that do not corrode, soften, or otherwise attack insulation or jacket in either wet or dry
state.
E. Install insulation with longitudinal seams at top and bottom of horizontal runs.
F. Install multiple layers of insulation with longitudinal and end seams staggered.
G. Do not weld brackets, clips, or other attachment devices to piping, fittings, and specialties.
H. Keep insulation materials dry during application and finishing.
I. Install insulation with tight longitudinal seams and end joints. Bond seams and joints with adhesive
recommended by insulation material manufacturer.
J. All metal surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned and treated with approved corrosion inhibitor
before applying the insulation. Insulation can be applied directly to galvanized surfaces.
K. Install insulation with least number of joints practical.
L. Lead bearing inserts shall be provided at all supports to ensure that the insulation is not
compressed or damaged. The inserts shall be treated hardwood or approved plastic.
M. Mechanical fasteners shall be used when installing slab or roll insulation. The fasteners shall be
the self-adhesive type and only fixed after cleaning to ensure proper adhesion.
N. Where vapor barrier is being installed, seal joints, seams, and penetrations in insulation at
hangers, supports, anchors, and other projections with vapor-barrier mastic.
1. Install insulation continuously through hangers and around anchor attachments.
2. For insulation application where vapor barriers are installed, extend insulation on anchor
legs from point of attachment to supported item to point of attachment to structure. Taper
and seal ends at attachment to structure with vapor-barrier mastic.
3. Install insert materials and install insulation to tightly join the insert. Seal insulation to
insulation inserts with adhesive or sealing compound recommended by insulation material
manufacturer.
4. Cover inserts with jacket material matching adjacent pipe insulation. Install shields over
jacket, arranged to protect jacket from tear or puncture by hanger, support, and shield.
O. Apply adhesives, mastics, and sealants at manufacturer's recommended coverage rate and wet
and dry film thicknesses.
P. Install insulation with factory-applied jackets as follows:
3.5 PENETRATIONS
A. Insulation Installation at Roof Penetrations: Install insulation continuously through roof
penetrations.
1. Seal penetrations with flashing sealant.
2. For applications requiring only indoor insulation, terminate insulation above roof surface and
seal with joint sealant. For applications requiring indoor and outdoor insulation, install
insulation for outdoor applications tightly joined to indoor insulation ends. Seal joint with
joint sealant.
3. Extend jacket of outdoor insulation outside roof flashing at least 50 mm below top of roof
flashing.
4. Seal jacket to roof flashing with flashing sealant.
B. Insulation Installation at Underground Exterior Wall Penetrations: Terminate insulation flush with
sleeve seal. Seal terminations with flashing sealant.
C. Insulation Installation at Aboveground Exterior Wall Penetrations: Install insulation continuously
through wall penetrations.
A. Requirements in this article generally apply to all insulation materials except where more specific
requirements are specified in various pipe insulation material installation articles.
8. For services not specified to receive a field-applied jacket except for flexible elastomeric and
polyolefin, install fitted PVC cover over elbows, tees, strainers, valves, flanges, and unions.
Terminate ends with PVC end caps. Tape PVC covers to adjoining insulation facing using
PVC tape.
9. Stencil or label the outside insulation jacket of each union with the word "UNION." Match
size and color of pipe labels.
D. Insulate instrument connections for thermometers, pressure gages, pressure temperature taps,
test connections, flow meters, sensors, switches, and transmitters on insulated pipes, vessels, and
equipment. Shape insulation at these connections by tapering it to and around the connection with
insulating cement and finish with finishing cement, mastic, and flashing sealant.
E. Install removable insulation covers at locations indicated. Installation shall conform to the
following:
1. Make removable flange and union insulation from sectional pipe insulation of same
thickness as that on adjoining pipe. Install same insulation jacket as adjoining pipe
insulation.
2. When flange and union covers are made from sectional pipe insulation, extend insulation
from flanges or union long at least two times the insulation thickness over adjacent pipe
insulation on each side of flange or union. Secure flange cover in place with stainless-steel
or aluminum bands. Select band material compatible with insulation and jacket.
3. Construct removable valve insulation covers in same manner as for flanges except divide
the two-part section on the vertical center line of valve body.
4. When covers are made from block insulation, make two halves, each consisting of mitered
blocks wired to stainless-steel fabric. Secure this wire frame, with its attached insulation, to
flanges with tie wire. Extend insulation at least 50 mm over adjacent pipe insulation on
each side of valve. Fill space between flange or union cover and pipe insulation with
insulating cement. Finish cover assembly with insulating cement applied in two coats.
After first coat is dry, apply and trowel second coat to a smooth finish.
5. Unless a PVC jacket is indicated in field-applied jacket schedules, finish exposed surfaces
with a metal jacket.
1. Secure single-layer insulation with stainless-steel bands at 300-mm intervals and tighten
bands without deforming insulation materials.
2. Install 2-layer insulation with joints tightly butted and staggered at least 75 mm. Secure
inner layer with wire spaced at 300-mm intervals. Secure outer layer with stainless-steel
bands at 300-mm intervals.
3. Apply a skim coat of mineral-fiber, hydraulic-setting cement to insulation surface. When
cement is dry, apply flood coat of lagging adhesive and press on one layer of glass cloth or
tape. Overlap edges at least 25 mm. Apply finish coat of lagging adhesive over glass cloth
or tape. Thin finish coat to achieve smooth, uniform finish.
C. Insulation Installation on Pipe Flanges:
1. Install preformed pipe insulation to outer diameter of pipe flange.
2. Make width of insulation section same as overall width of flange and bolts, plus twice the
thickness of pipe insulation.
3. Fill voids between inner circumference of flange insulation and outer circumference of
adjacent straight pipe segments with cut sections of block insulation of same material and
thickness as pipe insulation.
4. Finish flange insulation same as pipe insulation.
D. Insulation Installation on Pipe Fittings and Elbows:
1. Install preformed sections of same material as straight segments of pipe insulation when
available. Secure according to manufacturer's written instructions.
2. When preformed insulation sections of insulation are not available, install mitered sections
of calcium silicate insulation. Secure insulation materials with wire or bands.
3. Finish fittings insulation same as pipe insulation.
E. Insulation Installation on Valves and Pipe Specialties:
1. Install mitered segments of calcium silicate insulation to valve body. Arrange insulation to
permit access to packing and to allow valve operation without disturbing insulation.
2. Install insulation to flanges as specified for flange insulation application.
3. Finish valve and specialty insulation same as pipe insulation.
3.14 FINISHES
A. Duct, Equipment, and Pipe Insulation with ASJ, Glass-Cloth, or Other Paintable Jacket Material:
Paint jacket with paint system identified below and as specified in Division 09 painting Sections.
1. Flat Acrylic Finish: Two finish coats over a primer that is compatible with jacket material
and finish coat paint. Add fungicidal agent to render fabric mildew proof.
2. Finish Coat Material: Interior, flat, latex-emulsion size.
B. Thermal Insulation: After adhesive has fully cured, apply two coats of insulation manufacturer's
recommended protective coating.
C. Color: Final color as selected by Consultant. Vary first and second coats to allow visual inspection
of the completed Work.
D. Do not field paint aluminum or stainless-steel jackets.
3.18 ABOVEGROUND, OUTDOOR (AND UNCONDITIONED AREA) DUCT AND PLENUM INSULATION
SCHEDULE
A. Contractor shall verify and provide the thickness of the insulation based on the heat transfer
requirements for different sizes.
B. Concealed, rectangular, return-air duct insulation shall be one of the following:
1. Flexible Elastomeric: 25 mm thick.
2. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick.
3. Mineral-Fiber Board: 50 thick and 48-kg/cu. M nominal density.
4. Phenolic: 25 mm thick.
C. Concealed, supply-air plenum insulation shall be one of the following:
1. Flexible Elastomeric: 25 mm thick.
2. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick.
3. Mineral-Fiber Board: 50 thick and 48-kg/cu. M nominal density.
4. Phenolic: 25 mm thick.
c. Phenolic: 38 mm thick.
2. DN100 to DN300: Insulation shall be one of the following:
a. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick for Conditioned area.
b. Mineral-Fiber, Preformed Pipe 50 mm thick.
c. Phenolic: 38 mm thick.
3. DN 350 and Larger: Insulation shall be one of the following:
a. Cellular Glass: 75 mm thick.
b. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick for Conditioned area.
c. Phenolic: 50 mm thick.
D. Refrigerant Suction and Hot-Gas Piping:
1. All Pipe Sizes: Insulation shall be one of the following:
a. Flexible Elastomeric: 25 mm thick.
b. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick for Conditioned area.
c. Phenolic: 25 mm thick.
E. Heat-Recovery Piping:
1. All Pipe Sizes: Insulation shall be one of the following:
a. Polyolefin: 20 mm thick for Conditioned area.
b. Flexible Elastomeric: 25 mm thick.
c. Mineral-Fiber, Preformed Pipe Insulation, Type I: 25 mm thick.
d. Phenolic: 25 mm thick.
