Urban Analysis:
Anneessens
Anneessens in Brussels is the
densest populated, with a poor
population and a high unemploy-
ment-rate. The purpose of the
research was to get to know the
neighbourhood through spatial
parameters, the role of social
actors, as well as to decipher the
various urban forces shaping it. Anneessens
The analysis also included map- Bordering Neighbourhoods
ping of the population in terms of Pentagon
age, ethnicity and employment.
Brussels Region
The nieghbourhood is under the
threat of gentrification, reinforced
by the pedestrianization of the city
centre. Based on the statistica,
spatial analysis and interviews
with inhabitants and municipality
representatives an urban strategic
framework was proposed under a
guided timeline.

Plaze de
Lavapies,
Madrid
The neighbourhood is a truly
multi-ethnic neighborhood, with the
largest number of etnicities of all
neighborhoods in Spain.
Immigrants who suffered from the
terrible consequences of a non
existent right to housing and a lack of
housing, with poor housing
conditions and overcrowdedness.
It is the seat and cradle of urban
social movements, with a wide history
of squatters and social centers that
have bought NGOs, students, mili-
tants, young professionals and artists
of all kinds.
The project is an analysis of the MADRID
neighbourhood, its demographics, CITY
user analysis and proposed strategic
urban development plan based on
minimal change and allowing the
forces of the neighbourhood fix their
problems with support from the local LAVAPIES

Dabba (Box)
Ladies:
Participative
Project
The project studied place making in
the public spaces between housing in
Islamabad. It was carried out as a
series of events based on participatory
planning from the community.
A toolbox was devised that created the
neccessary elements of participation.
The data gathered from the field was
raw architectural drawings of ideal
homes as well as tangible ideas and
throughts from the perspective of the
members of the worlshop.
This approach enables us to conclude
that houses are more than just shells;
they encompass events, activites &
exchanges that cannot be quantified
but elicit the very existence of function-
ality and life.

Socio- Spatial Analysis:
Public space, Migrants &
Ethnicity
The purposed of the study was to test
the hypothesis if North Africans living
in Central Brussels have access to
good quality public spaces. The anal-
ysis shows that the neighbourhoods
with the lowest access to public space
within the core of the city have the
highest ethnicity rate and the lowest
economic status.

There is also a noticeable contrary

pattern as we move towards the pe-
riphery of the city; the economic
status increases and the ethnicity
construct decreases.

The study therefore affirms the

hypothesis that the marginalized
ethnic group of the North Africans
predominantly occupy the inner
neighbourhoods of Brussels, belong
to a lower economic status and have
very little access to public spaces.

Transmuting Government:
A New Political Framework
through Spatial Design
The objective of the thesis was to
understand how politics can be
translated within space and form of
a building.The complex designed
is a designated centre for
Parliamentary Support for Policy
Making. It brings together Media,
Think Tanks and Political Parties to
generate new ideas and concepts
for the healthy development of
parliamentary democracy; train
different stakeholders – people’s
representatives, in parliamentary
practices and traditions; undertake
studies and research in areas of
public interest in ways that facilitate
timely and appropriate policy
interventions by the Government.
