Ethan Frome Intro Lesson Plan
class reading paired with Romeo & Juliet. They will work on a pre-reading activity,
then be given an introduction to Edith Wharton and the themes within the
beginning part of the novel. Class will then read the prologue together before
students set off and work on the following chapters by themselves
Objectives: Make inferences about the themes and motifs of the story based on pre-reading
and prologue activity
Instruction
Opening (Hook or introductory activity):
Students will enter the classroom and listen as the teacher presents a series of
agree/disagree scenarios to engage with. After all students are done discussing, the class will
reconvene and the teacher will ask about the answers..Once this is done, the teacher will
have the students go to the media center to pick up their books.
Instruction:
The teacher will pull up a short presentation about Edith Wharton, the real-life inspiration for
the story, and the general outline of the novel. Students will have guided notes/worksheet for
the background info and questions on the prologue
Closing:
The class will shift focus back to Romeo and Juliet with “Love at first sight” activity.
