Course description: Concepts of basic fundamentals and theories


Learning outcomes: student will be able to:
1. Recognize basic concepts of scales, chords, tonality etc.
2. Analyze harmonic functions and progression of scores
Course Requirements:
1. Stefan Kostka ; Dorothy Payne. Tonal harmony: with an introduction to twentieth-
century music. New York: McGraw-Hill, c2009.
2. Weekly readings from blackboard
3. Assignments: the course requires weekly assignments, three in-class exams and a
take-home exam.
4. Final project: students will be paired up by the instructor and analyze a designated
score together. Each team will have a 5 mins in-class presentation at the end of the semester.
Printed handouts and PowerPoint are both required. Students have to submitted the final
version of their final project no later than December 12th.

90-100% = A 85-89% = B+ 80-84% = B 76-79% = C+


70-74% = C 65-69% = D+ 60-64% = D 0-59% = F

Grade distribution:
15% attendance and participation
20% weekly assignments
30% in-class exams
15% take-home exam
20% final project
