PHILIPPINES SITUATION
Highlights IN NUMBERS
- Out of the total 3,660 confirmed cases reported in the
Philippines until today, 60% are male, with the most af-
fected age group is 60-69 years (22.4%)
- 54% of all cases reported from National Capital Region
(NCR), followed by CALABARZON (7%) and Central Luzon
(3.3%). To prevent further spread of the disease, Rizal prov-
ince (CALABARZON) added additional restrictions on top of
the enhanced community quarantine.
- Out of the 163 confirmed deaths, 66% are reported from
NCR, 67% are male, with ages ranging from 7 to 90, and
the median age being 65.
- So far, among over 2,000 UN staff members in the Philip-
pines, 9 have tested positive: 7 from WHO and 2 from IOM
- Currently 10 laboratories capable of conducting COVID-19
testing, with an additional 69 laboratories yet to be as-
sessed.
- Department of Health (DOH) and Office of Civil Defence dis-
tributing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to priority
hospitals, with more PPE expected soon
- Online IPC trainings kicked off for both private and public https://ncovtracker.doh.gov.ph/

- Government in the process of preparing large-scale quaran-
tine facilities, while Local Government Units (LGU) with
support from NGOs and private sector are setting up com-
munity isolation centres.

Current Situation
As of 6 April, a total of 3,660 confirmed COVID-19 cases including 163 deaths have been reported in the
Philippines. 54% of all cases are reported from NCR, followed by CALABARZON (7%) and Central Luzon
(3.3%).
A total of 299 health workers have so far tested positive with COVID-19. 184 of these are doctors (61.5%),
followed by nurses (25.4%). A total of 10 health workers have died, all were doctors.

Out of total 163 confirmed deaths, 67% are male, with ages ranging from 7 to 90, and the median age be-
ing 65. 77% of deaths had either one or several known co-morbidities like diabetes, chronic kidney dis-
ease, hypertension, cardiac disease, bronchial asthma and cancer.
Among the 3,018 confirmed cases, 1,841 are male (60%) and 1,177 are female (40%). The most affected
age groups are 60-69 (22.4%) followed by 50-59 years (20.7%)

Country readiness and response operations


Country-level coordination
The Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) COVID-19 Response Plan was finalized and broadly shared. The
plan details how relevant clusters will complement ongoing response interventions to the COVID-19 out-
break in the Philippines from March to June 2020, with a primary focus on access to health care for vul-
nerable groups. The plan is budgeted at 90 million USD, out of which 50 million for health activities. The
health cluster encompasses all relevant sector including WASH, nutrition, sexual reproductive health, and
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). The plan can be downloaded at https://re-

Risk communication and community engagement


MSF is supporting with risk communication through its Filipino part-
ner Likhaan in Tondo (Manila) and the City Health Office of Marawi
(Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or BARMM).
In Marawi, MSF is also supporting with contact tracing and surveil-
lance.
The USAID-funded Breakthrough Action program has been support-
ing DOH Health Promotion Bureau with a dedicated Facebook site
https://www.facebook.com/DOHhealthypilipinas as well as a web-
site where all relevant IEC materials on COVID-19 have been made
available: http://dohhealthpromotion.ph/

Surveillance
DOH has made a dashboard available with analysis of COVID-19 data,
which is updated on a daily basis bit.ly/COVID19PHdashboard.
The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific also made a dash-
board available with data on COVID-19 from all countries in the re-
gion, including the Philippines

National laboratory system


There are currently 10 laboratories capable of conducting COVID-19 testing, with an additional 69 labora-
tories yet to be assessed. Total number of tests today is on average 1,700.

Infection prevention and control


The USAID-funded Medicines, Technologies, and Pharmaceutical
Services (MTaPS) program started conducting online IPC trainings for
hospital workers on Mondays and Wednesdays for the month of
April.
UNICEF started rolling out of IPC in community settings in coordina-
tion with Centers for Health Development of NCR, Regions 3, 4A and
BARMM.

Case management and continuity of essential ser-


vices
The Philippine Red Cross deployed 2 medical tents at the National
Kidney and Transplant Institute, one for Persons Under Investigation
and one for dialysis patients.

As of 3 April, WHO received more than US$ 274.1 million and an additional US$ 46.6 million in pledges to
