SINGULAR POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
Pronouns in Serbian belong to the Open Class Words and they change their form depending
on the gender, number or case. Just like nouns and adjectives, pronouns reflect gender so in
the case of the possessive pronouns we will have 3 forms for each gender.
Example: moj means my and it’s a masculine singular form; moja means my and it’s a
feminine singular form; moje means my and it’s a neuter singular form. Moj ends with a
consonant, so we know it’s masculine, moja ends with an a, so we know it’s feminine, and
moje ends with an e, so we know it’s neuter.
Note: In some grammar books possessive pronouns are referred to as possessive adjectives.
We will continue to use the name possessive pronouns in our lessons because we want you
to understand the concept of pronouns expressing possession. The gender of the possessive
pronoun you will use in a sentence will depend on what is possessed.
Let’s pair up the possessive pronouns with personal pronouns.

Example: On je moj muž - He is my husband
The Gender and Number Agreement: the masculine singular possessive pronoun moj
agrees with the masculine singular noun muž.
Example: Ona je moja devojka - She is my girlfriend
We have the word agreement in the sentence in gender and number: devojka is a
feminine singular noun and it must be paired with the feminine singular pronoun moja.
Example: Ovo je moje dete – This is my child
The Gender and Number Agreement: the neuter singular possessive pronoun moje
agrees with the neuter singular noun dete.
Notice how moj ends in a consonant, so we know it’s referring to something masculine;
moja ends with an a, so we know it’s referring to something feminine, moje ends with an
e, so we know it’s referring to something neuter. Remember, neuter words can end with
an e or an o.
The same pattern follows all of the other possessive pronouns.

Oni, one and ona, all mean they. And they all have the same possessive pronouns
njihov - their (masculine), njihova - their (feminine) and njihovo - their (neuter).
Ona je njegova devojka means She is his girlfriend. Notice how in Serbian the
words his girlfriend –njegova devojka, have to be represented in the feminine,
because girlfriend - devojka is a feminine word. As such, we have to use a
feminine possessive pronoun to match the feminine noun.
On je naš prijatelj means He is our friend. Again, since in this case the word
prijatelj is referring to a male friend, we have to make sure the possessive
pronoun matches the masculine noun, and that’s why we end up with naš
prijatelj.
Ona je naša prijateljica means She is our friend. Notice how the endings of the
words match the genders they correspond to. Feminine words have a endings and
we see this throughout the sentence Ona je naša prijateljica.
Masculine words end in consonants and we see this in the sentence On je naš
prijatelj.
How would you say You are my professor (and the professor is a man)? Vi ste moj
profesor. We use the polite personal pronoun “Vi” – for the 2nd case plural to
show respect. You will always use the polite “Vi” when talking to people older
than you, people you respect (i.e. teachers, professors…etc) and for people who
are your superiors (in rank for example).
Ja sam tvoj prijatelj means I am your friend (and you are a man).
How do you say I am your friend (and you are a woman)? Ja sam tvoja prijateljica.
