Possessive Pronouns: Practice Sheets

Sheet #1

Directions: Possessive pronouns show ownership. Here is the list of possessive pronouns. Notice that
only one uses an apostrophe:    

my, mine, your, yours, his, her, hers, our, ours, its, their, theirs, whose, one’s

Underline the correct possessive pronouns in the following sentences:

1. Is this (your, yours) coat?

2. You can’t have (my, mine) cookie.

3. It is (our, ours) turn.

4. Look at (her, hers) funny hat.

5. That ring has lost (its, it’s) shine.

6. This car is (my, mine).

7. Dogs love to play so it is a favorite activity of (their, theirs).

8. Are you sure this is (your, yours)?

9. Do you know (whose, who) book this is?

10. (Ones, One’s) opinion is welcome here.

B. Directions: Rewrite the sentence and replace the noun that is underlined with a possessive pronoun.  

1. Look at the toy’s hat.

2. Let’s go to Paul’s house.

3. That game is my family’s.

4. Is that Susan and Ted’s house?

5. I want to see Mary’s dress.

The second worksheet will cover the proper use of possessive pronouns when used with gerunds.
Practice will also be given in picking the right word from these words:

whose, who's, its, it’s, their, theirs, there's, your, yours, you’re

A: Introduction: Using gerunds with possessive pronouns can be tricky. Look at this sentence: “He did it
without me helping him.” Did he do it without “me” or without “helping”? The correct word is “my”, so
the sentence should be “He did it without my helping him.”

Directions: Let’s practice using possessive pronouns with gerunds. Underline the correct word in these
sentences.

1. I appreciate (you, your) cleaning the house.

2. (She, Her) walking the dog really helped me out.

3. (They, Their) singing brought tears to my eyes.

4. Did you enjoy (us, our) helping with the party?

5. (He, His) taking out the trash was a bonus. 

B. Directions: Underline the correct word.  Watch out for those contractions.
