Verbal Communication
Verbal Communication
Verbal Communication
Language is a collection of
symbols, letters, or words
with arbitrary(based on
individual discretion)
meanings ,which are
governed by rules and used
to communicate
LANGUAGE IS ARBITRARY
Words dont contain meanings. Words
are meaningful only after we have
associated them with some referent.
Words common in two cultures
sometimes signify different things.ie
conversation in French and in English
Words often generate very different
associations even when people share
the same language
DENOTATION and
CONNOTATION
Denotation:the primary association a
word has for most members of a
linguistic community.
Connotation:refers to other
secondary associations a word has
for one or more members of that
community
PRIVATE MEANING
Language can be used
idiosyncratically, assigning meanings
to words without agreement and, in
effect ,creating our own private
language.
One can decide ,for example ,to call
trees reds or cows.
SHARED MEANING
If we assign privat meanings to words,we can use them
to communicate with someone only if welet that person
knowwhat the referentsof these words are.
Text messaging hs lead to the formation of a new
language.

LANGUAGE &CULTURE
Culture creates a lens through which
we perceive the world and create
shared meaning
Sapir Whorf hypothesis: Our
perception of reality is determined by
our thought processes and our
thought processes are limited by our
language and therefore, that
language shapes our reality.
Language is abstract
Words stand for ideas and things but
they are not the same as those
things
