Verbal Communication

Language is a collection of
symbols, letters, or words
with arbitrary(based on
individual discretion)
meanings ,which are
governed by rules and used
to communicate

The two major codes of

communication are
Verbal
Non-verbal

You cannot unring a bell.

Outbursts can permanently taint a
our perception of celebrities.
No amount of apology can ever
reverse the damage

LANGUAGE IS ARBITRARY
Words dont contain meanings. Words
are meaningful only after we have
associated them with some referent.
Words common in two cultures
sometimes signify different things.ie
conversation in French and in English
Words often generate very different
associations even when people share
the same language

SYMBOLS and REFERENTS

Symbol is something used for
representing something else.(image of
lion symbol of courage)
Referent is the object for which the
symbol stands.
In English verbal symbol for the star in
our solar system is sun
The French use the verbal symbol soleil
The German Sonne

Disk is the symbol given to a storage

device.
It could have been called a blank
or urg
So initially ,no real association exists
between a word we agree to call
something and its referent.

Once we agree on a system of verbal

symbols we can use language to
communicate.

DENOTATION and
CONNOTATION
Denotation:the primary association a
word has for most members of a
linguistic community.
Connotation:refers to other
secondary associations a word has
for one or more members of that
community

NOTE:All people who speak English

belong to the same linguistic
community: yet within that
community certain groups exist for
whom even the primary associations,
or denotations, of a given word are
different.
In England you take a lift not an
elevator
You take the underground not the

PRIVATE MEANING
Language can be used
idiosyncratically, assigning meanings
to words without agreement and, in
effect ,creating our own private
language.
One can decide ,for example ,to call
trees reds or cows.

SHARED MEANING
If we assign privat meanings to words,we can use them
to communicate with someone only if welet that person
knowwhat the referentsof these words are.
Text messaging hs lead to the formation of a new
language.

LANGUAGE &CULTURE
Culture creates a lens through which
we perceive the world and create
shared meaning
Sapir Whorf hypothesis: Our
perception of reality is determined by
our thought processes and our
thought processes are limited by our
language and therefore, that
language shapes our reality.

People who use color in their

work(artists ,designers)probably use many
more color terms than do those for who
color is not so important(fire-fighters,
police officers).
The first group might use persimmon,
puce,lavender,and fuschia,while the
second group limits their vocabulary(and
thus their perception) to orange ,red,
purple and pink.

Thus critics note thought and

language may not be intimately
related, but experience and language
are. Our need to describe our
environment and the items within it
cause us to create language to do so

Language is abstract
Words stand for ideas and things but
they are not the same as those
things
