March 6, 2018

I. Objective/s:

At the end of the session the students are expected to:

1. illustrate Pascal’s Triangle in the expansion of ( x + y )n for small positive integral values of n;
2. prove the Binomial Theorem;
3. determine any term of ( x + y )n, where n is a positive integer, without expanding; and
4. solve problems using Binomial Theorem.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: The Binomial Theorem and Pascal’s Triangle
b. Reference/s: Pre-Calculus pp. 259-262

c. Materials of Instruction (IM’s)

III. Procedure
a. Daily Routine
- Prayer
- Checking of Attendance
b. Review
Review on Combinations

c. Motivation
HISTORICAL GEM: Is Pascal’s Triangle really Pascal’s?

d. Presentation of the Lesson/ Lesson Proper

1. Activity: Discuss the Binomial Theorem

Discuss the Pascal’s Triangle

2. Analysis: How do you determine the use of Pascal’s Triangle in the expansion of
( x + y )n for small positive integral values of n;

3. Abstraction: What is the difference in solving binomial ( x + y )n using between

Pascal’s Triangle and Binomial Theorem.

How does Pascal’s Triangle make sense in solving Binomial Theorem?

4. Application: Group Activity:

Group 1: Solve ( a+ b )5 using the Binomial Theorem
Group 2: Solve ( a+ b )5 using the Pascal’s Triangle for binomial expansion

IV. Evaluation : Solve the following.

1. ( a+ b )7
2. ( 2 a−b )5
