Measures of Central Tendency of Ungrouped Data

I. Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes discussion, 90% of grade 7 learners will be
able to:
a. Define the Measures of Central Tendency ( Mean, Median and Mode)
b. Appreciate the significance of the Measures of Central Tendency
c. Compute the Measures of Central Tendency.

Materials: Cartolina, Chalk, Chalkboard and PowerPoint presentation
III. Procedures:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

3. Checking of Attendance
B. Motivation:
- The learners will play a game called “What’s the Word, That’s the
Word” and to be facilitated by the teacher.
- The learners will rearrange the letters to form mathematical
terminologies that leads to the topic discussion.

C. LESSON PROPER (4A’s Approach)


1. ACTIVITY
 Divide the learners into three groups composed of ____ members.
 Every members of the group will write their name on the activity sheet
and will determine the number of their siblings to complete the table.
(Refer to activity sheet 1)
 The learners will arrange the given data from the least number of
siblings to the most number of siblings.
 The learners will answer the guide Questions on the activity sheet.

Guide Questions:

1. What is the total number of siblings of your group?


2. Get the quotient of the number of siblings when divided to the
total number of your group members.
3. When data were arranged from least to greatest what number of
siblings can be found on the middle?
4. What is the most number(s) of sibling of your group members?

2. ANALYSIS
1. What are the Mean, Median and Mode from the given activity?
2. How did the Mean, Median and Mode of the ungrouped data was
determined?
3. What are the examples of ungrouped data from the activity?
4. How Mean, Median and Mode described?
5. Give the importance of measures of central tendency?
6. What are the applications of central tendency?

Examples:

1.) Find the mean, median and mode of these scores

17, 15, 17, 18, 30, 19, 17.

a.) Mean

-Arrange the score in ascending or descending order


15,17,17,17,18,19,30
15+17+17+17+18+19+30
= 7

Therefore , the mean is 19.

b.) Median

-Arrange the score in ascending or descending order


15,17,17,17,18,19,30. There are 7 scores. Since 7 is an odd
number, simply get the middle score.

But what if there are 8 scores which id even number?

Example: 15,17,17,17,18,19,30, 30

For even numbers, the median is the mean of the two middle
values.

Therefore, the median is 17.5.

c.) Mode
-Arrange the score in ascending or descending order

Therefore, the mode is 17 since the number occurs most


frequently.

3. ABSTRACTION
Mean – it is the sum of the data divided by the number of data

4. APPLICATION

A survey was conducted among 50 grade 1 classes in various


schools to find the average class size of grade 1.

The table shows the data.

Find the Mean, Median and Mode.

Solution:

a. Mean: (𝑥̅ ) = 𝑁

15(1)+20(3)+25(5)+30(12)+35(10)+40(15)+45(2)+50(2)
= 50
15+60+125+360+350+600+90+100
= 50
1700
= 50
= 34
 Mean is 34

b. Median: ( ) = 25.5th position

2. Scores of students in 10-item quiz recorded as follows.
